22. PROBIOTICS FOR FARM ANIMALS AND POULTRY
POULTRY:
IMPROVING PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTIVITY:
*In birds, ensure health status by maintaining the digestive microflora and reducing
pathogenic bacteria (growth ,increase in egg productionfeed conversion)
PREVENT AND COMBAT DIGESTIVE DISORDERS
*By competitive exclusion of pathogenic bacteria, antimicrobial secretions, stimulation
of immune response.
Recent studies have shown that strains of L.salivarius isolated from chicken intestine
Produce bacteriocin with antagonistic activity against Gram +ve bacteria and C.jejuni.
*Mixture of probiotics consisting L.acidophilus and B.bifidium and S.faecalis – therefore
Results in increase in natural antibody production in serum and gut for antigens.
*Probiotics can be successfully used when broilers are fed with feed containing
mycotoxins.

23. CATTLE:
In bovines,preventing and combating digestive disorders (esp. diarrhea in livestock during
Lactation.
Influence ruminal metabolism of nutrients and stimulate activities to ruminal
micoorganisms
thereby maintaining health and improve productive performance.
Reported effects are:
Increased food intake,milk production and body weight.
S.Cerevisiae is found to have a growth effect on bacterial populations based on their
mechanism of action of the rumen.
Another is yeast make available the necessary vitamins for growth and development.
Probiotics are bioregulators that prevent reduction of ruminal pH by increasing use of LA
by some ruminal bacteria.

24. SHEEP:
•helps correct imbalance in bacteria,provides energy and helps in rehydration to
reduce recovery time from stress or in disease treatment in sheep.
•Prevents attachment of pathogenic bacteria by applying a barrier effect at
interface between pathogen and intestinal epithelial tissue.
e.g Supplementatipon of Streptococcus faecium, or mixture of S. faecium, and
some strains of LAB in the diets of lambs infected with E.coli leads to
improvement in growth and meat production.
Probiotics have icreased ammonia nitrogen only in re-faunated sheep
