What is Maternal Health?
The health of a woman when she is pregnant
What are signs of poor maternal health?
Sickness, new health conditions, complications that occur from pregnancy
such as: unknown bleeding, and pain that isn’t regular.
How can it be improved?
Research and finding the causes of poor maternal health then treating the
causes. Having the right resources improves maternal health.
3. Facts
• Since 1990, the maternal mortality ratio has been cut nearly in half, and
most of the reduction occurred since 2000.
• More than 71 per cent of births were assisted by skilled health personnel
globally in 2014, an increase from 59 per cent in 1990.
• Globally, there were an estimated 289,000 maternal deaths in 2013.
• After years of slow progress, only half of pregnant women receive the
recommended amount of antenatal care.
4. Why improving Maternal health resonates
with me?
• Maternal health resonates with me because I am a woman that will one
day get pregnant and have children and I want to have the best possible
maternal health when I do. There is research that shows that black women
have a higher rate of death from pregnancy and since I am a black women,
I need to know that I have the best resources and solutions to possible
things that can harm me.
5. How Can My Interest be Applied Locally?
• In Washington, the rate of pregnancy-related maternal deaths is 9 in
100,000 births, compared to 17 per 100,000 births in the rest of the
country.
• In 2016, the Washington Maternal Mortality Review was established
through Senate Bill 6534
• Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a survey of new
mothers conducted by Washington State Department of Health and the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
• Being involved in programs and reviews can help significantly and can help
improve maternal health.

• I can participate in non profit organizations for women and their

• I can raise awareness and be an advocate for improving maternal health
• I can gain as much insight on cases of pregnant women and learn more
about what can be done to help manage or prevent complications that
arise while women are pregnant.
