2. HEALTH
Health is Wealth . It is true in all the senses as without
health everything is useless.
To understand health in detail we need study all points
related health. In this class we are going to study-
ïDefinition of health
ïPhilosophy of Health and
ïConcepts of Health.
3. Definition of HEALTH
Health is defined differently and changed from time to time
by different authorities. But finally the definition given by
WHO is accepted by majority, as per WHO â
âHealth is a state of complete physical, mental, and
social well-being and not merely the absence of disease
or infirmity.â
4. Philosophy of HEALTH
To know about any topic in detail we need to
understand its philosophy. Philosophy of Health
includes-
1. Health is a fundamental human right.
2. Health is inter-sectoral.
3. Health is an integral part of development.
5. Philosophy of HEALTHâŠ.
4. Health is the essence of productive life, and not
the result of ever increasing expenditure on
medical care.
5. Health is central to the concept of quality of life.
6. Health involves individuals, state and
international responsiblity.
6. Philosophy of HEALTHâŠ.
7. Health and its maintenance is a major social
investment
8. Health is worldwide social goal.
9. Health is natural.
7. Concept of HEALTH
Concept means an abstract idea, or deep understanding of a
topic. Concepts about health kept changing from time. Theses
changing concepts are-
1. Biomedical concept.
2. Ecological concept.
3. Psychosocial concept.
4. Holistic concept
8. Biomedical concept
Traditionally, health has been viewed as an âabsence of
diseaseâ, and if one was free from disease, then the
person was considered healthy. This concept, known as
the âbiomedical conceptâ has the basis in the âgerm
theory of diseaseâ which dominated medical thought at
the turn of the 20th century. According to biomedical
concept of health, the human body is a machine,
disease is the breakdown of the machine and one of
the doctorâs task as repair of the machine.
9. Biomedical conceptâŠ
The criticism that is leveled against the biomedical
concept is that it has minimized the role of the
environmental, social, psychological and cultural
determinants of health. The biomedical model, for all
its spectacular success in treating disease, was found
inadequate to solve some of the major health problems.
Developments in medical and social sciences let to the
conclusion that the biomedical concept of health was
inadequate.
10. Ecological concept
Deficiencies in the biomedical concept gave rise to other
concepts. The ecologists put forward an attractive hypothesis
which viewed health as a dynamic equilibrium between man
and his environment and disease maladjustment of the human
organism to the environment. According to this concept:
âHealth implies the relative absence of pain and discomfort
and a continuous adaptation and adjustment to the
environment to ensure optimal functionâ.
11. Ecological conceptâŠ..
Human, ecological and cultural adaptations determine not only
the occurrence of disease but also the availability of food and
the population explosion. The ecological concept raises two
issues, imperfect man and imperfect environment. History
argues strongly that improvement in human adaptation to
natural environments can lead to longer life expectancies and a
better quality of life even in the absence of modern health
delivery services.
12. Psychosocial concept
Developments in social sciences revealed that health is
not only a biomedical phenomenon but also influenced
by social, psychological, cultural, economic and political
factors of the people concerned. These factors must be
taken into consideration in defining and measuring
health. According to this concept health is both a
biological and psychosocial phenomenon.
13. Holistic concept
The holistic model is a synthesis of all the above
concepts. It recognizes the strength of social,
economic, political and environmental influence on
health. It has been described as a unified or
multidimensional process involving the well-being of
the whole person in the context of his
environment.
14. Holistic conceptâŠ.
This concept explains the view of the ancients that
health implies a sound environment. The holistic
approach implies that all sectors of society have an
effect on health, in particular, agriculture, animal
husbandry, food, industry, education, housing, public
works, communications, and other sectors. The
emphasis is on the promotion and protection of health.
