A smart home can be defined simply as a number of electronic devices that communicate
with each other and easily controlled by the owner with minimum efforts.
Smart homes appeared to overcome the limitations of traditional homes by giving the
chance to the users to interact with home appliances via software applications installed on
their mobile phones or computers.
The software applications are connected to home devices via wire/wireless using a
number of sensors and actuators that are programed by microcontrollers such as Arduino,
PIC, and PLCs.
Nowadays, employing wireless connections such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, and WiFi
providing a lot of facilities to implement a wide range of smart home applications.
Moreover, utilizing smart homes improve life by saving time, effort, and money.

Motion detection based security
A motion detector/sensor is a device that has the ability to sense objects movement
(especially human) in a certain range, it can pick up the motion through various manners such
as radio waves, infrared rays, ultrasonic, and laser.
Computer vision based security
Images are usually captured from cameras or extracted from recorded video then processed
and analyzed to provide suitable responses (e.g., activating alarms, sending emails, and
making calls) in real-time without human intervention.
Smart card based security
Smart card is an electronic device made of plastic or metal with an integrated microchip
inside to store digital information used as a security token to control authentication access.

Handwriting recognition based security
Handwriting recognition technique can be employed in a number of applications in smart homes
such as user identification and access authentication.
Voice and speech recognition based security
In voice recognition based applications, the recorded voice (by a microphone attached to a
computer or a mobile phone.) is analyzed for the quality of the sound to recognize who is the
speaker as an example.
In speech recognition based applications, the spoken words are recorded and then interpreted to
commands that perform some specific tasks.
Password matching based security
Password is a simple security technique that includes a string of letters, numbers, symbols, or
combinations provided by the user to prevent his/her digital device or information from
unauthorized access.

2. Fire Alert
Nowadays, fire alert systems are widely utilized in smart homes to ensure the safety of
home owners as well as to prevent or reduce the occurrence of property loss. These
systems are installed to notify automatically (without human intervention) the residents
of homes about emergency situations such as gas leak, smoke/flame detection, and fire
detection.
3. Entertainment
Entertainment in smart homes refers to providing a pleasant and comfortable living space
for people. The aim of entertainment applications is to provide joyfully and relaxing
sense for home users by managing light intensity and audio devices based on their mood
and controlling TVs by gestures.

4. Assistive Services
An assistive service is a term refers to the electronic devices used to help disabled people who
have a physical problem to perform their daily activities the same as the normal people do.
Assistive services can be in many forms such as wheelchairs controlled via Bluetooth or head
movements, controlling appliances by eye-tracking, voice recognition, hand gestures, and
facial expressions.
5. Energy Efficiency
It simply means using less energy to operate home devices without decreasing the result of
their functionalities. The benefits of energy efficiency applications in smart homes are
decreasing the energy used by different home devices and as a result, bill costs will be
decreased.

5. Automation
Home automation refers to the ability to manage the work of home appliances such as
lights, windows, doors, and heaters. This is performed when the user sends
activation/deactivation commands to the automation system via a tablet, smartphone, or
remote control. home automation applications can be implemented using two
communication mediums:
Wired: In this type, all components of the automation system are connected to each
other using wires.
Wireless: all components of the automation system are connected to each other
wirelessly via different mediums such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, infrared, and Wi-Fi

6. Environment Monitoring
The most common applications of home environment monitoring are :
Temperature and humidity detection: the aim is to monitor the air temperature and
humidity inside the home to ensure that they are at acceptable levels by automatically
turning ON/OFF devices remotely via a mobile phone as an example.
Water management and leak detection: the aim is to manage water usage and to
detect water leaks inside the home leading to reduce bill costs. Water leak frequently
happens inside the home via pipe damage or damage in the tap which makes water
flows uncontrolled.
Air quality detection: the aim is to continuously and in real-time check the indoor air
quality such as checking the level of dust, oxygen, and carbon monoxide in the air.

This paper contributes to the understanding of smart home systems along with the
major efforts introduced to enable their applications in our life.
The aim is to provide a comprehensive survey on the applications of smart home
systems upon the most important studies in literature.
A classification of these applications is given after examining the purpose and
enabling technologies of each application area.
It is encouraged to do further research in this respect to expand and deepen the scope
of this work and to raise the need of more efforts from both industry and academia to
tackle the challenges and issues of employing such applications in our life.
