CONNECTIVITY
CYBER SECURITY
• Connectivity is a key for all smartness. Data needs to be transferred for several purposes and
connectivity is needed for remote control including autonomous vessels
• Connectivity is key also for smart sea way where data needs to be transferred to the port
• Helsinki has strong expertise in marine connectivity
• Nokia is expanding to that sector, Ericsson is doing R&D in Finland. Both of them work with both ship – to port connections and in-
ship connection including IoT solution.
• There are new startups (like Kyynel, Ukkoverkot) in the field Kyynel has created solution that uses ships as basestation creating a
substitute for satellite connection and Ukkoverkko provides long-distance data connection working near to shore.
• Established marine companies are developing their own solutions – Wärtsilä has been able to control unmanned
ships over satellite and ABB has a remote control center for their marine tech in Helsinki
• Finland and Helsinki have very strong research and education in radio technology, signal processing and many
related fields (thanks to our industrial history).*
• NB! Helsinki has no communication satellite technology companies even tough the international satellite
companies are part of many of our development programs. That is the missing part in the cluster.
CONNECTIVITY
• Helsinki has strong expertise in adding IoT and other data collection technologies on marine vessels,
analyzing big data and using that data for optimization, remote control and maintenance
• At upper end data is used for artificial intelligence where the final end is the autonomous vessels. Three
out of four autonomous ship developer are located in Finland (Wärtsilä, Rolls Royce and ABB in Finland,
Kongsberg is not) – besides that there is an alliance in China to develop autonomous ship. HNA Group leads the alliance
named Unmanned Cargo Ship Development Alliacen https://www.maritime-executive.com/article/hna-group-forms-
chinese-alliance-for-autonomous-ships#gs.MyKXMu4
• NAPA, Eniram and ABB are strong in IoT based route optimization
• Finland is a significant hub for AI – both in practical solutions and scientific research
• Aalto University has an IoT campus – companies from the marine industry are represented on the campus
http://aiic.aalto.fi/fi/
• More generally: Finland has a wide range of applications in unmanned vehicles and remote technologies in many fields
as well as related research in TUT, Aalto and LUT. *
• NB! Finland typically imports sensor, laser-scanners, radars etc. Even so, that is not major part of value generated.
AI + BIG DATA
ANALYTICS +
IOT
• Cyber security is important for an environment where the amount of software is increasing and
more functions are remote controlled or automated.
• Generally the cyber security field is really decentralized. There are no dominant players in the field.
• Finland possesses expertise in all fields of cyber security from securing connectivity, IoT, software and industrial
design in general. As an examples of cyber security, F-Secure is one of the biggest companies in Europe and
Ericsson is centralizing its cyber security R&D in the Helsinki region. R&D covers malware protection, secure
protocols for communication etc.
• Cyber security is an increasing trend and IMO’s regulation will take place in 2021.
• NB! There is no single provider for maritime security
• Norwegian cluster is more visible in that domain.
CYBER
SECURITY
CLEANTECH
COST-
EFFICIENCY
SAFETY
• Finland provides a wide range of expertise in clean technology to the maritime sector
• Clean sources of power: Bio (Neste), LNG, electricity (ABB, Danfoss/Visendo) – ABB is a global leader
in the field.
• Solutions for waste and waste water treatment for ships (Evac and Wärtsilä)
• Finland provides exhaust gas purification like nitric oxide and sulfur oxide (and energy saving technologies).
(Wärtsilä)
• Finns have typically been the first ones to introduce new environmental requirements – that is partly because of
vulnerability of the Baltic Sea, partly because our technology leaders can provide solutions like exhaust gas
purification and waste water treatments
• Helsinki is an excellent place to monitor new solutions since regulation is ahead of the rest of world and Finnish companies provides
solutions the meet the regulation.
• NB! There are many new fuels to be tested on marine industry. Not all of them like methanol is tested in Helsinki
CLEANTECH
• Helsinki offers a wide range of expertise to improve cost-efficiency by cutting fuel consumption
• Route optimization like NAPA, Eniram, ABB
• Energy efficiency engineering like Deltamarin
• Ship design helps to create ships more cost efficiently. Deltamarin, Elomatic and Aker Artic.
• New innovations coming in (like Norse Power)
• NB! Fleet management is not a major strength in Helsinki region
COST-
EFFICIENCY
• In arctic expertise Helsinki is the leading hub covering everything from ice monitoring
to oil spill prevention
• Iceye and Navidium provide solutions for ice monitoring (in r&d phase), Lamor and Artica in oil spill prevention,
Deltamarin in icebreaker design, Arctech in icebreaker building, Artica operating icebreakers.
• Baltic Sea is one of the most challenging environments with narrow passages, shoals and heavy traffic. Especially
in Gulf of Finland the traffic is crossing because Helsinki–Tallinn connection, and traffic to and from St.
Petersburg
• The traffic control systems are working in these challenging conditions. Finnish officials run many systems like sea guars,
environment officials etc. GOFREP which is shared between Estonia, Finland and Russia is the most important one of those.
• NB! Even thought safety issues are taken seriously in Finland, many of the industry players are missing like
salvage companies
SAFETY
DESIGN &
ENGINEERING
SHIPYARDS
SUB-
CONTRACTING
Several leading engineering companies in marine field like Deltamarin and Elomatic are located in Finland
Finnish cruising ships are 80 % Finnish made – Finland can cover the whole supply chain. Supply start from steel
manufacturer SSAB, includes engine and propulsion providers like ABB, Rolls Royce and Wartsila, automation like ABB,
Protacon and Valmet, bathrooms ect. manufacturer like Parmarine and HVAC solution like Halton.
Finland has three big shipyards of which one is in Helsinki and few smaller repair shipyards and yacht producers. That
means wide range of production of ships and boats. Big shipyards are Arctech in Helsinki, Meyer in Turku and Rauma
Marine Construction in Rauma. Yacht producers are Baltic Yachts and Nautor
The key strength of Helsinki and Finland is that they can provide the whole supply chain from designing the ships to building them. However,
the whole supply chain in not based in Helsinki (even though Helsinki has engineering, shipyards and technology). Therefore Helsinki provides
natural access point to that cluster.
New companies investing in Helsinki are more likely to be connected to Helsinki/Finnish strongholds like cruising industry

OTHER ISSUES
• SMART SEA WAYS TURNS THE LOGIC. AUTONOMOUS TECHNOLOGIES REQUIRE NEW SHIPS. However,
making sea ways smart may reduce costs also with old fleet. A project related to that will be released in the near
future (Finnpilot Pilotage Oy and Meritaito) – that should be utilized to attract new companies to visit Finland
(https://www.liikennevirasto.fi/-/rauman-merivaylasta-tehtiin-alykas-ja-entista-turvallisempi#.Wqt11ejFKUk).
• FINLAND OFFERS EXPERTISE IN AUTONOMOUS TRAFFIC AND VESSELS IN GENERAL – those companies are
shifting to marine industry as well.
• AI AND ROBOTS ARE GENERAL PURPOSE TECHNOLOGIES and major companies like ABB and Siemens are
searching for technologies that can be used for many business domains. That is important to keep in mind when
searching for FDI prospects. These are also spearheads of Helsinki region more generally.

WHY HELSINKI AND FINLAND?
DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT!
"Finland is the home of top ICT expertise and a strong
maritime cluster. That is why Rolls-Royce has decided to
establish the centre in Turku.”
- Sauli Eloranta, SVP, Rolls-Royce
“It is easier to find top class engineers in Finland than
many other countries at the moment. We’re also very
happy with the smooth cooperation with research
institutes in Finland.”
- Timo Jokiaho, Vice President of the Finnish R&D Center, Huawei
"We are especially enthusiastic about colliding our world
class ICT startup scene with strong maritime players.
New networks will boost exchanging ideas and create
pioneering community for intelligent shipping.”
- Piia Moilanen, Program manager, Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation
“Hiring is never easy but the main reason we chose to set
up operations in Helsinki is the huge talent pool here. We
want to find the best engineers and offer them a great
challenge and purpose while giving them the flexibility and
freedom to individually decide how to find the best
solutions”.
- Marc Lamik, Head of Tech Expansion, Zalando

  • 10. FIELDS OF COMPETENCE IN THE HELSINKI REGION AI + BIG DATA ANALYTICS + IOT CONNECTIVITY CYBER SECURITY CLEANTECH COST- EFFICIENCY SAFETY DESIGN & ENGINEERING SHIPYARDS SUB- CONTRACTING
  • 11. AI + BIG DATA ANALYTICS + IOT CONNECTIVITY CYBER SECURITY
  • 12. • Connectivity is a key for all smartness. Data needs to be transferred for several purposes and connectivity is needed for remote control including autonomous vessels • Connectivity is key also for smart sea way where data needs to be transferred to the port • Helsinki has strong expertise in marine connectivity • Nokia is expanding to that sector, Ericsson is doing R&D in Finland. Both of them work with both ship – to port connections and in- ship connection including IoT solution. • There are new startups (like Kyynel, Ukkoverkot) in the field Kyynel has created solution that uses ships as basestation creating a substitute for satellite connection and Ukkoverkko provides long-distance data connection working near to shore. • Established marine companies are developing their own solutions – Wärtsilä has been able to control unmanned ships over satellite and ABB has a remote control center for their marine tech in Helsinki • Finland and Helsinki have very strong research and education in radio technology, signal processing and many related fields (thanks to our industrial history).* • NB! Helsinki has no communication satellite technology companies even tough the international satellite companies are part of many of our development programs. That is the missing part in the cluster. CONNECTIVITY
  • 13. • Helsinki has strong expertise in adding IoT and other data collection technologies on marine vessels, analyzing big data and using that data for optimization, remote control and maintenance • At upper end data is used for artificial intelligence where the final end is the autonomous vessels. Three out of four autonomous ship developer are located in Finland (Wärtsilä, Rolls Royce and ABB in Finland, Kongsberg is not) – besides that there is an alliance in China to develop autonomous ship. HNA Group leads the alliance named Unmanned Cargo Ship Development Alliacen https://www.maritime-executive.com/article/hna-group-forms- chinese-alliance-for-autonomous-ships#gs.MyKXMu4 • NAPA, Eniram and ABB are strong in IoT based route optimization • Finland is a significant hub for AI – both in practical solutions and scientific research • Aalto University has an IoT campus – companies from the marine industry are represented on the campus http://aiic.aalto.fi/fi/ • More generally: Finland has a wide range of applications in unmanned vehicles and remote technologies in many fields as well as related research in TUT, Aalto and LUT. * • NB! Finland typically imports sensor, laser-scanners, radars etc. Even so, that is not major part of value generated. AI + BIG DATA ANALYTICS + IOT
  • 14. • Cyber security is important for an environment where the amount of software is increasing and more functions are remote controlled or automated. • Generally the cyber security field is really decentralized. There are no dominant players in the field. • Finland possesses expertise in all fields of cyber security from securing connectivity, IoT, software and industrial design in general. As an examples of cyber security, F-Secure is one of the biggest companies in Europe and Ericsson is centralizing its cyber security R&D in the Helsinki region. R&D covers malware protection, secure protocols for communication etc. • Cyber security is an increasing trend and IMO’s regulation will take place in 2021. • NB! There is no single provider for maritime security • Norwegian cluster is more visible in that domain. CYBER SECURITY
  • 16. • Finland provides a wide range of expertise in clean technology to the maritime sector • Clean sources of power: Bio (Neste), LNG, electricity (ABB, Danfoss/Visendo) – ABB is a global leader in the field. • Solutions for waste and waste water treatment for ships (Evac and Wärtsilä) • Finland provides exhaust gas purification like nitric oxide and sulfur oxide (and energy saving technologies). (Wärtsilä) • Finns have typically been the first ones to introduce new environmental requirements – that is partly because of vulnerability of the Baltic Sea, partly because our technology leaders can provide solutions like exhaust gas purification and waste water treatments • Helsinki is an excellent place to monitor new solutions since regulation is ahead of the rest of world and Finnish companies provides solutions the meet the regulation. • NB! There are many new fuels to be tested on marine industry. Not all of them like methanol is tested in Helsinki CLEANTECH
  • 17. • Helsinki offers a wide range of expertise to improve cost-efficiency by cutting fuel consumption • Route optimization like NAPA, Eniram, ABB • Energy efficiency engineering like Deltamarin • Ship design helps to create ships more cost efficiently. Deltamarin, Elomatic and Aker Artic. • New innovations coming in (like Norse Power) • NB! Fleet management is not a major strength in Helsinki region COST- EFFICIENCY
  • 18. • In arctic expertise Helsinki is the leading hub covering everything from ice monitoring to oil spill prevention • Iceye and Navidium provide solutions for ice monitoring (in r&d phase), Lamor and Artica in oil spill prevention, Deltamarin in icebreaker design, Arctech in icebreaker building, Artica operating icebreakers. • Baltic Sea is one of the most challenging environments with narrow passages, shoals and heavy traffic. Especially in Gulf of Finland the traffic is crossing because Helsinki–Tallinn connection, and traffic to and from St. Petersburg • The traffic control systems are working in these challenging conditions. Finnish officials run many systems like sea guars, environment officials etc. GOFREP which is shared between Estonia, Finland and Russia is the most important one of those. • NB! Even thought safety issues are taken seriously in Finland, many of the industry players are missing like salvage companies SAFETY
  • 20. Several leading engineering companies in marine field like Deltamarin and Elomatic are located in Finland Finnish cruising ships are 80 % Finnish made – Finland can cover the whole supply chain. Supply start from steel manufacturer SSAB, includes engine and propulsion providers like ABB, Rolls Royce and Wartsila, automation like ABB, Protacon and Valmet, bathrooms ect. manufacturer like Parmarine and HVAC solution like Halton. Finland has three big shipyards of which one is in Helsinki and few smaller repair shipyards and yacht producers. That means wide range of production of ships and boats. Big shipyards are Arctech in Helsinki, Meyer in Turku and Rauma Marine Construction in Rauma. Yacht producers are Baltic Yachts and Nautor The key strength of Helsinki and Finland is that they can provide the whole supply chain from designing the ships to building them. However, the whole supply chain in not based in Helsinki (even though Helsinki has engineering, shipyards and technology). Therefore Helsinki provides natural access point to that cluster. New companies investing in Helsinki are more likely to be connected to Helsinki/Finnish strongholds like cruising industry DESIGN & ENGINEERING SHIPYARDS SUB- CONTRACTING
