2. Imagine a horse-drawn cart travelling along a stony track. At this
point we pose three questions. What speed could it be going at?
What is the load that it can take? How long might it take to
accelerate? Now imagine a large five-lane motorway, full of powerful
cars, with almost instantaneous acceleration. Here we again pose the
three questions above. The difference in the answers is the essence
of the Mobile World Congress. In this edition we have seen how 5G is
going to change the way we understand connectivity and open up a
world of possibilities. Machines will have more autonomy and the
challenge will consist in seeing how the human-machine combination
will lead us to a more sustainable and connected future.
4. 3
The 5G revolution is not as far off as we might think. More than
70 operators are already committed to this faster and more
efficient technology. Its implementation around the world will
enable a new generation of hyperconnectivity.

5G is the main focus of attention as far as the future of
connectivity is concerned. This technology enables more
effective data transfer, reducing latency in the transmission. It is
capable of increasing the speed of the network connection,
streamlining the sending of information and data collection.
Such connectivity promises to increase the speed of the existing
4G by a factor of 100, enabling any device connected to the
internet to benefit.
The USA, China, Japan and South Korea are pioneering
countries in the development of 5G technologies, with the first
applications in 2019-2020. It is expected to arrive in Europe
between 2020 and 2025, due to the fragmented regulation of
smartphones.

5G opens doors to a wide range of applications:
downloading the complete series of Game of Thrones will
take you 60 seconds, or the possibility of accessing the
entire collection of the Prado Museum in HD in one
second. This involves the process of analysing big data
from the closest contact between the device and the
gateway to the internet, optimising costs.
The central theme of this MWC was 5G and the goal of
the Congress was to link it to practical applications to
harness its great utility. Figures such as José Mª Álvarez-
Pallete, CEO of Telefónica, are already preparing
infrastructure in collaboration with governments to offer
this development to companies and consumers in the
near future.

Artificial intelligence remains one of the main trends
technology will be offering us in coming years. The goal is to
succeed in extending its functions and increasing the efficiency
of the response to each user request, courtesy of constant
updates.
Such intelligence will not be possible without a processor that is
up to the task and in this area Qualcomm is set to play a
decisive role; in this edition of the MWC the American
manufacturer has played a prominent part.
During their MWC presentations, companies such as Oppo,
Xiaomi, ZTE, LG and OnePlus all emphasised the power of this
new processor, which will feature in the first 5G mobiles to hit
the market. Samsung also announced a few days previously
that it was going to use this chipset in its new range of
products in the Galaxy S10 family.
The processor will therefore be one of the protagonists of the
technological revolution that awaits us, because its use will
extend to virtually all the objects that, thanks to Qualcomm, will
be intelligent.
The company is also showcasing its Quick Charge Qi, which
will provide devices with a charge of 20W via Wi-Fi. This is a
development that will overcome one of the greatest current
technological barriers.

Different strategies are evident here. The technology
giants are throwing their weight behind smart speakers
and domotic devices. Despite being recently introduced
products, some brands already stand out, such as
Amazon with Alexa and Google with Google Home.
Meanwhile brands such as LG and Samsung have given
their backing to their ThinQ technology, which converts
the smartphone into the communication nexus of all the
objects in the home.
The way the assistant evolves centres on prediction
thanks to the analytics generated by its use, which
determine the consumer’s future trends.
In car manufacturing, the focus is on assisted driving as a
step that will pave the way to autonomous vehicles.
Lastly, special mention should go to Sophia, the first
humanoid capable of maintaining a conversation; the
property of Hanson Robotics Limited, she was activated
in 2015 and in October 2017 became the first robot with
citizenship of a country, in this case Saudi Arabia.

BLOCKCHAIN
Blockchain is a technology that will change the very essence
of many businesses as we know them.
Many uses of this technology were seen at MWC. Firstly, as an
element of validation in the IOT devices that were so prevalent
throughout the event. The impact on Industry 4.0 will be vast,
because everything that involves logistics will be managed by
blockchain technologies, enabling goods to be traced back to
their origins. IBM presented its blockchain technology applied
to the sector used to manage the purchase of inventories in
the digital realm, streamlining the entire administrative process
through the use of smart contracts, making the purchasing
system more transparent and efficient. IBM also presented its
blockchain solution for managing the royalties of musical
compositions, enabling the distribution of original content to be
controlled.

CLOUD
COMPUTING
VS EDGE
COMPUTING
All the large companies are currently jockeying for position in
the cloud computing market, with Amazon, Google, Microsoft
and IBM some of the most important players worldwide. Edge
Computing by contrast will make it easier not to have to
process data on cloud servers if it is not necessary, thereby
retaining the data closer to the source and gaining efficiency
in the way that it is processed, something that makes a great
deal of sense when the IOT becomes a reality. The data
generated by all the connected devices, above all at the
industrial level, is going to turn Edge Computing into a new
area of development within companies at the time that they
also incorporate 5G technology, because the transmission
between these local devices will mean that cloud technology
can be dispensed with in certain contexts.

DOUBLE,
FOLDABLE AND 3D
SCREENS
One of the major news stories at MWC was the unveiling of
Samsung’s and Huawei’s foldable screens and LG’s double
screen; capable of working as one single screen or as two
independent screens depending on what the user wants to do
with them. Recent years have seen mobiles and tablets
competing with each other for the consumption of content.
These screens are set to occupy an intermediate space that
enable both types of device to open up new possibilities.
In the case of Samsung and Huawei, the phone itself can
unfold to attain the size of a small tablet, whereas LG has
opted for a double screen that can be separated from the
phone, providing a means of consuming content. This
represents the prospect of a new way of producing content,
opening up a new market for apps given that multitasking
possibilities on the device itself increase significantly. Some
examples of this: we’ll be able to watch a series and search for
information about the actors while we watch. Or watch a
sports event and get information about the players, or
comment about our favourite programme on social media
without having to exit the video app, because we will be able to
have Twitter or WhatsApp open simultaneously.

IMMERSIVE
CONTENT
VR, AR and MR devices were conspicuous throughout the Congress.
Increasingly reduced in size, lighter and more manageable,
dispensing with cabling, they are starting to become a reality.
Microsoft launched its mixed reality (MR) device, Hololens 2. This
device enables holograms to be projected onto the user’s glasses
and field of view, superimposed on the real environment. It was
undoubtedly one of Microsoft’s major launches and a clear
commitment to an industry that is going to have a great future in
immersive content. Mobile manufacturers are also investing in
augmented reality (AR), incorporating this technology into their
latest devices as a built-in feature. Virtual reality (VR) continues
advancing in terms of content and above all connectivity. Thanks to
5G it will be possible to see events live without a time lag, and enjoy
playing online games almost latency free.

MOBILITY OF
THE FUTURE
The evolution of the car industry centres on connected vehicles that
collect information to enhance the experience of the user and
improve the efficiency of the vehicle.
The traditional role of the vehicle is being replaced by a new
function focused on broadening usage based only on driving. This
tendency prioritises ample interactive spaces, thanks to totally
automated and safe driving. The goal is to be able to offer a new
travel experience that enables the user to take advantage of the
journey time as he or she pleases. BMW has emphasised this new
role with its Vision iNEXT concept car, a 100% electric, automated
and fully connected vehicle, designed to make users feel like they
are in their own living rooms at home.
A future of on-demand mobility is envisaged. German
manufacturers (BMW and Daimler) will create new independent
companies focused on shared vehicle services, merging the Reach
Now and Drive Now service with Daimler’s Car2Go.
Another large manufacturer that stood out this year was SEAT with
its unveiling of the Minimó model. This has the goal of
strengthening carsharing thanks to its reduced size and a portable
battery that users will be able to charge in their own homes and
insert into any other SEAT model. It is the closest that cars have got
to the current model of shared vehicles (bicycles and motorcycles).

REMOTE
CONTROL
With 5G technology and its benefits in speed and latency
reduction, the remote control of vehicles will be enhanced.
The South Korean company KT Corporation
demonstrated the potential with automated vehicle
projects, such as remotely controlled airships and
ambulances. It is a technology applicable to Smart Cities
that will succeed in improving inhabitants’ quality of life
and will be capable of reaching hard-to-access areas
offering risk-free and rapid response solutions.
Meanwhile Acciona, Orange and 5G Barcelona are
working on automated vehicles to resolve breakdowns in
communication. This will enable them to reduce
occupational hazards, to focus on operations and to
increase the speed and efficiency of resolutions. They
conducted a pilot test of the MIR200 platform at MWC
2019, with 2D 360° cameras that can be controlled
remotely thanks to 5G technology.

Industry 4.0 will be involved in major transformation thanks to 5G
technology, which will enhance connectivity and the transfer of
data. Its application will benefit the development of Smart Cities,
logistics, vehicles and the security of the IoT.

INDUSTRY 4.0
Banc Sabadell unveiled its “Bstartup” initiative, a biohacking
project. They demonstrated how someone with a chip
embedded in his or her hand would be able to operate, carry
out transactions and make payments with the Banc Sabadell
app, validating each of his or her actions with the chip.
Lastly we saw the emergence of streamlined shopping: a form
of shopping that eradicates the traditional formula involving
tills, payment processing, etc. It looks as though “Amazon Go”
will have competition.
27. 26
SMART CITIES
Huawei is notable for its “Smart Cities” programme in
more than 160 cities. A technology with the goal of
resolving citizens’ problems, a key factor in their
development. 5G plays a key role in the development of
this infrastructure, enabling intercommunication between
devices.
A car communicates with a traffic light, which in turn
communicates with a bus, which communicates with a
metro train, and between them they can help a city’s
traffic management understand and optimise travel flows.

MWC19 demonstrates that in order to develop projects we need to have a combination of tools and vision. With the
vision of a cognitively connected and smart world, we can envisage an infinite horizon that would not be viable without
the development of a 5G infrastructure that will create the basis needed to enable artificial intelligence, the internet of
things and immersive content to reach their full potential. People and users will be the ultimate judges and deciders of
the future that is to come, given that their capacity for adaptation and acceptance are the key factors ensuring that a
specific technology either thrives or stalls. Ultimately it is they who will decide whether a launch or a trend ends up as a
passing fad or will become one of those landmarks that represents a before and after moment in our day-to-day lives.
