Today’s anticipated announcement by GCap Media plc could include a plan to
close the local AM transmitters of its oldies 'Capital Gold' service and switch
the station entirely to digital by spring 2007.
Following the successful launch of the station in London in 1988, it had
achieved more than an 11% share of listening by 1991. As Capital acquired
other stations, the AM service was rolled out across the country, but has
suffered declining audiences in recent years. Now the station currently has
less than a 2% share in its combined AM areas, and just over one million
listeners – two thirds the size of the audience it had attracted in London alone
a decade ago. Hours listened to the AM Capital Gold network have fallen by
more than a third during the last five years, while out-of-area digital listening
across the UK attracted only 269,000 extra listeners last quarter. Although the
radio industry has credited this decline to the diminishing popularity of the AM
waveband, some critics point to commercial radio oldies stations’ year-in year-
out repetition of a relatively small playlist of past hits, at a time when 'BBC
Radio Two' is offering a similar audience a considerably wider range of oldies
spiced with album tracks and recent releases.
