Agricultural Census conducted in Myanmar:
1952, 1993, 2003 and 2010
Agricultural Census in Myanmar and FAO Collaboration
Settlement and Land records Department (SLRD) Under
the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MoAI) prepare
and implement the MCA 2010 Through the Technical
Cooperation Programme of FAO Myanmar
FAO project TCP/MYA/3301 provide technical ssistance,
training and capacity building in census methodologies,
sampling design, census instrument development, data
processing, analysis, report writing and dissemination
3. Census Core Module (carried out in February and March 2009 )
The CM carried out for listing of households and identification of
agricultural holdings.
CM was carried out for households in all villages/blocks in the
country. However, only 85 % of the villages in the country
was covered because of security problems in some areas
CM collect all households in the country took information of
household engaged in agricultural activities, livestock rising
and main source of income
CM identified agricultural holdings was :
small agricultural holdings,
large agricultural holdings,

Supplementary Module (SM)
Base on the listing of households from CM, SM was
carried out and enumerators interviewed; .
All large household agricultural holdings
about 33 % of small agricultural holding
households.
All household agricultural holdings in the ward
All households with aquaculture holdings and
All non-household sectors involved in crop
production, keeping/breeding
livestock/poultry and aquaculture operations.

6. Sampling Design used for small agricultural
holdings in SM
Divided in to two stasge
First stage
Selection of sample village at township
level using probability proportional to size
(pps)
Second Stage
Used systematic sampling in selecting small
agricultural holding. The sampling rate for
selecting the sample households with small
agricultural holdings was 1/3 or 33.33
percent.

13. Major Challenges in MCA 2020
While SLRD took responsibility to carry out MCA
2010 the core group involved in MCA 1993 and
2003 were at the age of retired.
With the assistance of FAO in the area of sampling
design, questionniare perparation , analysis, report
preparation and dissemination SLRD carried out
activities.
The most valuable output was implementing the
“learning by doing” techniques across different
activities.
