Ioannina is the capital of Epirus region in northwestern Greece, located on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis at an elevation of 500 meters. It has a Mediterranean climate but receives the most rainfall in Greece due to its inland location. Notable landmarks include the Castle of Ioannina built in 528 AD overlooking Lake Pamvotis, the ancient Greek theater of Dodoni that could accommodate 18,000 spectators, and archaeological and Byzantine museums housed in the castle that showcase the region's history. IOANNINA
Ioannina is the capital and largest city of Epirus, an administrative region
in north-western Greece, with a population of 112,486 (in 2011). It lies at
an elevation of approximately 500 metres (1,640 feet) above sea level, on
the western shore of
Lake Pamvotis. It is
located within the
Ioannina municipality,
and is the capital of
Ioannina regional unit
and the region of
Epirus.
WEATHER
Ioannina has a Mediterranean climate tempered by its inland location and
elevation. Summers are typically hot and dry, while winters are wet and
colder than on the coast. Ioannina is the wettest city in Greece. The
absolute maximum temperature ever recorded was 42.4 °C (108 °F), while
the absolute minimum ever recorded was −13 °C (9 °F).
LAKE PAMVOTIS
Lake Pamvotis, which is also known as the lake of Ioannina, is located at
an altitude of 470 meters above sea level. It has a length of 7.9
kilometres, a width of 1.5 to 5.4 km, average depth of 4-5 feet, maximum
depth of 11 meters and 19.4 square kilometres. It is surrounded by the

mountains Mitsikeli and eastern ridges of Tomaros (or Olytsikas ) and
formed by the waters of three main sources gushing at the foot of Mt.
Mitsikeli. It is associated with
the legends of Kyra - Frosini
and Dourachan.
THE CASTLE OF IOANNINA
The Castle of Ioannina was built in 528AD. It is located by the lake. Its
current shape is because Ali Passas rebuilt the castle in 1815. In these
days there are houses in the castle and the place is habitable. Also, it is
an attraction and it makes Ioannina more beautiful.

ANCIENT GREEK THEATRE DODONI
Dodona in Epirus
in north-western
Greece was an
oracle devoted to
a Mother Goddess
identified at other
sites with Rhea or
Gaia. However, in
that location it
was called Dione,
who was joined
and partly
supplanted in historical times by the Greek god Zeus.
In Dodona there is also an ancient theatre, which was built in the
3rd century BC. and follows the plan are all Greek theaters. The theatre
could accommodate 18,000 spectators and was the largest of its time.
The theater was destroyed and rebuilt twice.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina is located in the city center of
Ioannina and in a prominent position in the so-called hill Litharistsia. The
Archaeological Museum of Ioannina built in the decade of 1960 (1963-
1966) according to the architectural design of the illustrious Greek
architect Aris Konstantinidis. The refurbished New Archaeological
Museum of Ioannina began operating in 2011.

BYZANTINE MUSEUM
The Byzantine museum is located inside the castle of Ioannina, Southeast
citadel known as
Kale citadel. It
was built in 1960
and inaugurated
in 1995 on the
ground floor of
the former "king
stand." In the
same area the
Military Hospital was built, while in that place existed the remains of the
central Seragos Ali Pasha. Visitors can admire exposed Gospels
manuscripts and one printed book of 1499, issued in Venice, from the
Printing of Nicholas Vlastos. These exhibits provide visitors the
opportunity to learn about the history and development of the city of
Ioannina, over the centuries.

THE UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA
The University of Ioannina was founded in 1964. In 1970 it became an
independent Higher Education Institution, which grew rapidly in the
coming years.
Today, the University of Ioannina includes 17 academic Departments
which altogether number 13,523 undergraduate students. A number of
organised postgraduate study programmes are on offer that combine
taught and research elements both at Master's and Doctoral level.
Approximately 1,300 students are involved in full-time study mode
progressing to a Master's degree, while 2,217 students are currently
pursuing their studies at Doctoral level.
THE ZOSIMAIA SCHOOL
The 1st High School of Ioannina (Zosimaia School) was one of the
most important Greek educational institutions (high schools) during the
last period of Ottoman rule in the region (1828 to 1913). The Zosimaia
was founded in 1828 with personal spending of brothers Zosima and still

operates as a high school, according to the regulations of the Ministry of
Education, Culture and Sports.
