I
In
Italy,
there
are
currently
13,457
state,
local

and
private
ins,tu,onal

5. The
situa,on

Italy
There
are
about
6,000

and
about
2,000
university

6.
The
situa,on
in
Italy
• Due
to
its
historical
background,
Italy’s
book
heritage
is
distributed
throughout
the
country
and
the
library
landscape
varies
greatly.
• There
is
no

• Standard

interoperability

different
systems
are
indispensable
tools
for
the
management
of
interlibrary
services.
7. The
Na,onal
Library

The
Na,onal
Library
Service
(Servizio

–
SBN)
is
the
network
of
Italian
libraries
promoted
by
MiBACT,
the
Regions

to
overcome
the
fragmenta,on
of
Italian
library

the

-‐ managing
related
services
Currently,
the
SBN
network
includes
5615
libraries
of
all
ins,tu,onal
types
performing
ac,vi,es
in
various
fields
of
study.

10. Interlibrary

document
delivery
services
in
Italy
¨ In
Italy
there
are
efficient
library
systems
that
manage
ILL
services
locally
,
but
which
have
difficulty
communica,ng
with
each
other
because
they
use
different
socwares.
¨ The
services
have
been
developed
and
organized
at
the
provincial,
regional
or
university
level
and
are
only
accessible
to
local
users
accredited
with
a
user
id
and
password.
¨ Libraries
ocen
have
to
use
several
ways
of
managing
ILL
requests,
duplica,ng
their
work
(e-‐
mail,
web
form,
different
procedures).
11. A
user
can
locate
a
document
in
the
OPAC
SBN,
but
can
only
request
a
loan
if
registered
at
a
library
belonging
to
a
local
system
(in
this
example
the
Politecnico
University
library
system
in
Milan).
12. ILL-‐SBN:
objec,ves
¨ Overcome
the
barriers
between
different
applica,ons
by
adop,ng
a
standard
common
language
and
shared
data.
¨ Expand
the
pool
of
partner
libraries
and
,
consequently,
the
services
offered
to
library
users.
¨ Achieve
an
integrated
na,onal
ILL
service
that
can
act
as
a
point
of
reference
at
the
interna,onal
level.
13. What
is
ILL-‐SBN?
¨ It
is
a
web
service
that
is
freely
accessible
on
the
Internet
at
no
cost.
¨ It
enables
the
communica,on
of
ILL
transac,ons.
¨
It
is
available
to
all
interested
libraries:
single
libraries,
system
hubs,
centralized
loan
services,
Italian
and
foreign
libraries.
550 Italian libraries currently belong to
the ILL-SBN service.
14. How
does
ILL-‐SBN
work?
¨ An
ILL
request
includes:
the
,tle
of
the
book
or
document,
the
iden,fier
of
the
library
where
it
is
located
and
the
messages
exchanged
between
libraries
to
manage
requests
(document
delivered,
received,
and
returned).
¨ ILL-‐SBN
is
a
tool
that
allows
for
this
informa,on
to
be
shared
through
integra,on
with
catalogues,
the
use
of
unique
iden,fiers
for
libraries
and
ISO-‐ILL
10160-‐10161
compliant
message
transmission.
¨ Partner
libraries
are
iden,fied
with
an

standard identifier assigned in
Italy
by

as

What
can
be
done
Faced

reduce
the
expansion

users
are
increasingly
adop,ng
the
