there

currently
13,457
state,
local
authority,
university
and
private
ins,tu,onal
libraries.

to
its
historical
background,
Italy’s
book
heritage
is
distributed
throughout
the
country
and

library
landscape
varies
greatly.

is
no
na,onal
centre
for
interlibrary
loan
and
document
delivery
• Standard
communica,on
and
interoperability
among
different
systems
are
indispensable
tools
for
the
management
of
interlibrary
services.

Na,onal
Library
Service
-­‐
SBN
The
Na,onal
Library
Service
(Servizio
Bibliotecario
Nazionale
–
SBN)
is
the
network
of
Italian
libraries
promoted
by
MiBACT,
the
Regions
and
universi,es
to
overcome
the
fragmenta,on
of
Italian
library
resources
with
the
aim
of:
-­‐ sharing
bibliographic
informa,on
in
a
na,onal
collec,ve
catalogue
-­‐ managing
related
services
Currently,
the
SBN
network
includes
5615
libraries
of
all
ins,tu,onal
types
performing
ac,vi,es
in
various
fields
of
study.

Library
Service
-­‐
SBN
SBN
partner
libraries
catalogue
their
documents
at
the
local
level
and
share
bibliographic
informa,on
in
the
na,onal
Index
in
real
,me
using
a
shared
cataloguing
system.
The
bibliographic
informa,on
is
made
available
to
users
in
both
the
local
OPAC
and
OPAC
SBN
at
the
na,onal
level.
OPAC
SBN
is
the
union
catalogue
of
the
na,onal
network
and
it
is
the
primary
service
access
for
Italian
and
foreign
users,
who
can
easily
locate
documents
in
the
libraries
belonging
to
the
network,
but
who
find
it
difficult
to
make
ILL
service
requests.

loan

delivery
services
in
Italy
¨ In
Italy
there
are
efficient
library
systems
that
manage
ILL
services
locally
,
but
which
have
difficulty
communica,ng
with
each
other
because
they
use
different
socwares.
¨ The
services
have
been
developed
and
organized
at
the
provincial,
regional
or
university
level
and
are
only
accessible
to
local
users
accredited
with
a
user
id
and
password.
¨ Libraries
ocen
have
to
use
several
ways
of
managing
ILL
requests,
duplica,ng
their
work
(e-­‐
mail,
web
form,
different
procedures).

a
web
service
that
is
freely
accessible
on
the
Internet
at
no
cost.

the

ILL
transac,ons.

is
available

all
interested
libraries:
single
libraries,
system
hubs,
centralized
loan
services,
Italian
and
foreign
libraries.
550 Italian libraries currently belong to
the ILL-SBN service.

work?
¨ An
ILL
request
includes:
the
,tle
of
the
book
or
document,
the
iden,fier
of
the
library
where
it
is
located
and
the
messages
exchanged
between
libraries
to
manage
requests
(document
delivered,
received,
and
returned).
¨ ILL-­‐SBN
is
a
tool
that
allows
for
this
informa,on
to
be
shared
through
integra,on
with
catalogues,
the
use
of
unique
iden,fiers
for
libraries
and
ISO-­‐ILL
10160-­‐10161
compliant
message
transmission.
¨ Partner
libraries
are
iden,fied
with
an
ISIL
standard identifier assigned in
Italy
by
ICCU
as
ISIL
na,onal
agency.

libraries;
efforts

underway

integrate

Sbn
Web

libraries
manage

libraries
using
the
interface
of
their
own
applica,ons.

• Foreign
libraries

use
the
Aleph500
and
Sebina
OpenLibrary
systems
can
also
communicate
with
ILL-­‐SBN

ISO-­‐ILL
standards.
• Foreign
integrated
libraries
can
localize

in
the
SBN
catalogue
and

protocol
of
intent
with
Italian
Ex
Libris

ITALE

services.

amachment
to
the
protocol
sets
out
the
technical
specifica,ons
for
interoperability
between
the
two
systems.
• Interoperability
with
the
new
ExLibris
ALMA
product
has
been
studied
and
guaranteed
and
tests
are
underway
for
the
implementa,on
of
the
dialogue
protocol.
• The
technical
specifica,ons
for
dialogue
between
the
ILL-­‐SBN
and
the
Sebina
OpenLibrary
libraries
have
been
defined.
• ICCU
has
signed
a
protocol
of
intent
with
Abes
which
provides
for
coopera,on
in
interlibrary
loan
and
document
delivery
services
and
the
development
of
interoperability
between
the
respec,ve
SBN
and
SUDOC
systems.

Faced
with
the
trend
to
reduce
the
expansion
of
local
collec,ons,
users
are
increasingly
adop,ng
the
network
as
a
single
giant
library
and
need:
• to
get
guidance
to
access
quality
content
and
integrated
services.
• to
easily
obtain
documents
in
the
various
forms
in
which
they
can
be
made
available,
from
the
original
document,
to
photocopies,
to
tablets.

Increase
coopera,on
among

not
part
of
the
project
for
integrated
services,

NILDE
(Network
Inter
Library
Document
Exchange)
system
of
document
delivery,
focused
on
delivering
documents
in
digital
form
and
linked
to
the
Na,onal
Periodical
Publica,ons
catalogue
ACNP.
-­‐ digital
loan
planorms:
Media
Library
Online
(MLOL)
and
Indaco
Network.
The
interac,on
process
with
these
en,,es
has
not
yet
been
defined,
but
interoperability
is
technically
possible.

What
can
be
done
In
a
context
which
is
largely
decentralized,
interoperability
is
not
only
a
prerequisite
for
a
na,onal
policy
which
aims
to
expand
public
access
to
local
and
private
en,,es,
but
also
an
incen,ve
to
work
together
with
partners
to
find
solu,ons
to
the
administra,ve
and
organiza,ons
aspects
of
coopera,on.
Key
issues
(copyrights,
fees,
coopera,on
agreements
with
other
systems)
are
being
discussed
in
Na,onal
Library
Service
inter-­‐ins,tu,onal
work
groups
(MiBACT,
Universi,es,
Regions).

What
can
be
done
Through
communica,on
and
coopera,on,
the
ILL-­‐SBN
service
aims
to
implement
the
na,onal
resource
sharing
system
which
the
IFLA
has
termed
a
fundamental
infrastructure
for
the
sharing
of
resources
at
an
interna,onal
level:
Each
country
should
aim
to
develop
an
efficient
naBonal
resource
sharing
system,
since
naBonal
resource
sharing
systems
are
the
essenBal
infrastructure
of
internaBonal
resource
sharing

With
this
objec,ve,
it
offers
various
levels
of
collabora,on
and
integra,on
and
makes
available
to
those
wishing
to
integrate,
the
technical
informa,on
on
socware.
