Design Thinking is gaining traction amongst business people, but unfortunately design doesn't happen by thinking about it. You have to roll up your sleeves and make things. In this workshop for UCLA Anderson, I show MBAs tactical design activities that they can put to work now.

Presented in New York at IXDA-NYC 03-20-2015 Startups and large organizations alike have to be nimble and react to market change faster than ever. The entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs within these organizations know that, but don’t always have the right methods at their disposal to be successful. Our team has increasingly been asked to support these innovators and their teams to create exceptional User Experience Designs and gain organizational support of the process. Emergent UX is a process we use to (1) deeply understand the users’ currently unmet needs on a cognitive, behavioral and emotional level, (2) create an open platform for innovation using the best of User-Centered Design, Design Thinking, and Lean Startup, and (3) gather critical insights about stakeholders and harness persuasive psychology to positively align the team on goals, ultimately nurturing both the product and the team behind it.

Agile is changing the way we create software. Design, and Design Thinking, is becoming pivotal to business success. The UX game is changing, and you need to step up! Daniel Oertli (CIO, REA Group) and Jason Furnell (Experience Design consultant, ThoughtWorks) will discuss the changing role of UX in fast moving, Agile development environments, presenting case studies demonstrating the impact that a design-led approach has had at Australia’s No.1 real estate site (www.realestate.com.au). This talk will present concepts that will challenge your thinking and introduce you to new methods that will increase your impact as a designer working on software and business strategy projects. The Agile development methodology dramatically changes the role of designers: the build is the design. Agile concepts like ‘working software over comprehensive documentation’ and the disciplines of ‘just enough’ and ‘just in time’, mean that traditional, heavy weight specification documentation is no longer effective – or even possible. Practitioners need to find ways to ‘power up’ their design impact. Jason and Daniel will discuss how to use collaborative design as a ‘force multiplier’, share the experience of designing in real-time, and show you how to let go, be fearless and take your team with you on a journey that builds trust, buy-in and design momentum. They will challenge you to shift your focus; to make the transition to design thinking, and focus on design facilitation in order to increase the scale and complexity of the things you design.

My opening keynote at UX Riga, 2016 UX strategy is about analyzing an organization’s business strategy and outlining what needs to be done from a UX perspective to ensure that the goals of the business strategy are achieved. In brief, UX strategy is the glue that binds the company vision (goals) with the day-to-day UX tactics (execution). Without a clear UX strategy, it is entirely possible to design killer UX concepts, yet fail miserably in the marketplace. That happens a lot. This talk aims to help companies and designers avoid costly yet easily avoidable pitfalls.

Application programming interfaces (APIs) are a way modern websites and applications share data with users. From sharing user profile data between services to displaying relevant information from one service to another, APIs enable us to develop a single platform of shared data. In other words… it’s about people. This talk will walk through how to leverage the practice of human centered design to create robust and meaningful APIs that help meet users needs. We’ll touch on topics such as: * How and why to involve a cross disciplinary on an API team into the HCD process (Engineering, UX, Product) * What HCD methods and techniques to use in order to create a healthy API ecosystem

Like it or not, more and more interactions between companies and their customers are occurring via an interface. Careful consideration of the interaction and visual design is of paramount importance to any company wishing to grow their customer base or loyalty. The importance of visual interface design has risen sharply since the introduction of smart phones and tablets and is becoming ever more complex. Executives now care more than ever about the visual interface and what it means to their brand. So how does one stand out? This talk will help designers create visual interfaces for dense, complex products and make their experiences memorable and useful. The talk highlights some of the key differences between more traditional visual design mediums and designing for the interface. It will also discuss how to design a unique visual interface but put the needs of users first, how to add surprise and delight to critical moments of the experience, and how craftsmanship and attention to detail can set you apart in a visually complex medium.

At each stop on our tour, we’ll be giving a lecture presentation about how each of us as designers can work for the greater good. We know, however, that intention only goes so far; we must collectively establish best practices. When we’re designing for homelessness, health, poverty, education, and well-being, the stakes are higher than ever, with little room for half-hearted efforts. With that in mind, we have compiled a Toolkit for both design students and educators (or really for anyone who wants to apply creative problem solving to social issues) that outlines 13 values and corresponding strategies for not just how to design for the greater good, but how to produce GREAT design for the greater good. (Note: The 13 values are derived from the Designer’s Handshake document included in our book, Design Revolution: 100 Products that Empower People).

The visual principles of harmony, unity, contrast, emphasis, variety, balance, proportion, repetition, texture and movement (and others) are widely recognized and practiced, even when they aren’t formally articulated. But creating a good design doesn’t automatically mean creating a good experience. In order for us to cultivate positive experiences for our users, we need to establish a set of guiding principles for experience design. Guiding principles are the broad philosophy or fundamental beliefs that steer an organization, team or individual’s decision making, irrespective of the project goals, constraints, or resources. Whitney will share a universally-applicable set of experience design principles that we should all strive to follow, and will explore how you can create and use your own guiding principles to take your site or product to the next level.

NOTE: this is NOT the slide deck I presented, rather it's a "extended dance remix version" where many things I cut out for time are put back in. In 2013, Don Norman updated The Design Of Everyday Things. In 2015, references to "affodances" and "feedback" were everywhere at GDC. As games reacher broader audiences, it's critical that game designers make games accessible to players who are more familiar with Amazon than Fallout 4. A positive user experience can create the next Monument Valley or Clash of Clans. Norman pointed out that a positive user experience begins with usability, but it doesn't end there. Great user experiences anticipate the user's needs and then go beyond that to delight. User experience designers have evolved a variety of approaches and tools to assure that the a product is "a joy to own, a joy to use." In this talk, Christina will explore the core principles of user experience design, and how it can create games that are elegant and complete experiences that both serve and delight their players. Takeaway She will begin with relevant UXD approaches: Hick's Law, Concept Models, as well as affordances and feedback. She will present an introduction to useful techniques in UXD, from charrettes to journeymaps to usability. Finally, why user experience design is more than just good business, it's a moral prerogative. Intended Audience This talk is for game Designer, artists and anyone who has to make decisions about player-facing interfaces. A familiarity with popular games and software is needed, but no advanced knowledge is required. It will be an accessible talk.
