2. FOOD ADULTERASION
Adulterated food is impure, unsafe, or unwholesome food. In
the United States, the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), regulates and enforces laws on food safety and
has technical definitions of adulterated food in various United States

4. HISTORY
๏ง 1906 (21 U.S.C. 601 et seq.)
๏ง 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic
Act (21 U.S.C. 321 et seq.)
๏ง 1957 Poultry Products Inspection Act (21
U.S.C. 451 et seq.)
๏ง Products that are adulterated under these
lawsโ definitions cannot enter into commerce
for human consumption. In India, food
adulteration is increasing daily.
8. Milk Adulteration
๏ง A glass (250ml) of unadulterated whole milk
will give around 146 kcals; 8gms of fat and
protein with 257mg of calcium.Calcium and
other vitamins and minerals in milk make it
an important part of a healthful diet for
people of all ages. The benefits of drinking
milk include strengthening bones, improved
cardiovascular and oral healthand even relief
from PMS.
9. Adulterants used in Milk:
๏ง
Milk is most commonly diluted with water -
this not only reduces its nutritional value, but
contaminated water can also cause additional
health problems.
๏ง The other adulterants used are mainly starch,
sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), sugar, urea,
hydrated lime, sodium carbonate, formalin,
and ammonium sulfate.
11. MAGGI ADULTRATION
๏ง The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA)
in Uttar Pradesh said high lead content was
found during routine tests on two dozen packets
of instant noodles, manufactured by Nestle in
India
๏ง Two FDA officials said all the packets of instant
noodles tested in the state-run laboratory were
contaminated.They found a lead concentration
of 17.2 parts per million (ppm), nearly seven
times the permissible limit. The FDA officials said
the acceptable limit of lead ranges between 0.01
ppm and 2.5 ppm
13. TURMERIC AND PULSES
MetanilYellow and Kesari Dal (Added to enhance the
yellow colour of a food substance)
๏ง
Test
Dissolve half a spoon full of besan or turmeric powder in 20
ml of lukewarm water. Add a few drops of hydrochloric acid
or any commonly available acid at home. If the water turns
pink, violet or purple, it shows the presence of Metanil
yellow
๏ง .
Harmful effects
It's highly carcinogenic and if consumed over a continuous
period of time it can also cause stomach disorders.
14. PANEER AND MILK
๏ง
Starch (used to give it a thick, rich texture)
๏ง
Test
Take a small sample of the product in a test tube, add 20 ml
of water and bring to a boil. Cool to room temperature and
add a drop or two of iodine solution. If the solution turns
blue, it marks the presence of starch.
๏ง
Harmful effects
Unhygienic, unprocessed water and starch can cause
stomach disorders. Starch greatly reduces the nutritional
value of the ingredient.
15. ICE CREAM
๏ง Adulterant
Washing powder (used to add a bright white
sheen and lightness of flavour)
Test
Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice on the ice
cream. If it starts to froth and bubble, it marks
the presence of washing powder.
Harmful effects
It can cause severe stomach and liver disorders
16. COFFEE POWDER
๏ง
Adulterant
Tamarind seeds, chicory powder (used to add bulk and
colour)
๏ง
Test
Gently sprinkle coffee powder on the surface of water in a
glass. The coffee will float whereas chicory will start to sink
within a few seconds. Also, the falling chicory powder will
leave a trail of colour behind due to the large amounts of
caramel it contains.
๏ง
Harmful effects
These can cause diarrhea, stomach disorders, giddiness and
severe joint pains.
17. HOW TO CATCH THE ADULTERER
According to the directives by the FDA, if a
packed product with an ISI or an AGMARK tests
positive for adulteration, you can take the
sample to the Agmark head office on theTulsi
Pipe road, between Matunga Road and Mahim
railway station, and register an official
complaint. The agencies then conduct their own
tests, and if confirmed, raid their premises and
take legal action against erring companie
