1. Personal Report: Over the Edge
I and the creative and media students were able to go and watch ‘Over the Edge’. There were many
ups and downs with this performance. For the first 10 minutes we had to go and wait. The curtains
were down, and I was really curious about what was behind the curtains. After seeing the poster for
this performance, I was pretty sure this would start off with a song, and I also thought it would be
performed by the main character. When the curtains were drawn there was a person on having
breakfast on a table and there was music in the background, but there was no one singing. I thought
the whole concept was good, but it would have been a lot better if there was someone singing too,
as it would have had a better impact on the audience because it would have been more exciting.
There were two uses to the table that was present in the first part, and one was just using it as a
table, and the second way they used the table was by making it into a mirror. When they
transformed it into a mirror there were two people there, and they were copying each other’s
actions for the audience to realise the tables meant to be a mirror. In my opinion that was a really
clever way to use the table, as it made the scene a lot more interesting. However, in some places the
people who were copying each other’s actions, they weren’t in sync, which really made the scene go
down a whole level, as it made it look very messy, and unorganised.
One thing that really did catch my attention was this dance sequence. It was half way through the
performance, and the dance moves were really good, and all the dancers were in sync with each
other which made it look a lot better. The whole dance part was amazing, but one thing that made
the dance look even better was their costumes. What they were wearing was black clothing, but
they were luminous, which looked great, as the dance went hand in hand with the costuming. I think
the person who decided this had in mind the way they will dress which made it all look really put
together. Also, with the clothing, it had a great effect on the audience, because it made everyone go
‘wow’, and it really did look unique.
On the other hand one thing I really didn’t get during this performance was a song in which they had
a really scary tune, and scary background. To me it didn’t go with the whole performance at all,
because the whole performance was really clam and did have tough times, but nowhere in the
performance did I think there would be horror. It did look really cool, with the wind blowing, but it
looked like a completely different performance when it came to that part of the performance, which
I think confused, the audience a little too.
Another way that it could have been better was if they had a whole group performance at the end.
This would have shown unity between the characters, which would have had a great impact on the
audience in my opinion. Also, it would make it seem like a good ending, and that’s what people like
to see, and would have made people feel really good at the end. Even though they did finish with a
song, whole of the cast wasn’t present, so even though they had a good impact on the audience, it
would have been a lot better if all the characters were there, no matter how small their part was in
the production.
Overall, this performance did disappoint me a little, because I think I expected a lot more than what
they had to offer. Even though they had a lot of great moments, the bad aspects of this performance
downgraded the performance as a whole. I wouldn’t recommend this to a friend, as I think the
performance wasn’t something extraordinary and even though there were moments which were
2. amazing, I don’t think it’s worth what we paid, so I was pretty upset on how this performance turned
out to be.
