is dying!
The virtual document
- data displayed in a layout or app -
only simulates a document.

There is no longer a sharp delineation between
structured and unstructured.
Todays systems must cope with
any and all types of data and information.
When documents turn into data,
there are major implications for the
legal character of the resulting
information objects.

an essential requirement for
ECM products.
Cloud and mobile add to the confusion
of architecture and standard interfaces
of ECM solutions.

Integration into other applications
is crucial for ECM as infrastructure.
There is no need for
overloaded ECM clients –
enabling with viewers, electronic
folders and other embedded modules
is enough for the user interface.

Their adoption of new technologies
is lagging behind

will involve not only traditional ECM
vendors, but also include the big
standard software vendors, cloud
service providers, and many others.
Vendors of standard software will
continue to add ECM features to their
products and services.

Mobile changes everything:
• Small devices and small displays.
• Apps are the revival of fat clients.
• New usage models with focused,
slimmer functionality.
• Information at your fingertips,

Cautions:
• Small displays and weak, slow
connections are not sufficient for
traditional documents.
• There are many security issues.
• Integration into line of business
applications is typically spotty.

System control and data entry
were dominated by keyboard and
mouse in the past.
New systems use speech and other
acoustic, visual or sensoric means.

Going forward, information
management must be able to:
• Manage audio, video, and other
multi-media objects.
• Retrieve, access and explore
complex media objects.
• Cope with the larger size, number
and representation of these
information objects.

of Metadata

The globalization of information
exchange and commerce works
only with multilingual information
systems.
The knowledge and wisdom of
internet resources can only be
leveraged by overcoming language
barriers.

Automated, synchronous
translation and interpretation
become obligatory.
Only structured and controlled
metadata and thesauri deliver
reliable results for legal and
commercial translation and
information classification.

The End of
On-Premise

The cloud is here!
The cloud is a major challenge for
conventional on-premise ECM
solutions.

The cloud offers different models
for using modern ECM solutions:
• Outsourcing to a computer center
• IaaS and PaaS
• Ready-made SaaS
• Hybrid of on-premise and cloud
architectures
• Combinations of these features

Only ECM vendors who provide
cloud-based ECM services at
reliable computer centers will
survive in the long run.
All cloud service providers will offer
storage, archiving and ECM to make
users stay on their platforms.

Governance&
Its Last
Stronghold:

A battle between light & darkness?
Enterprise Search vs.
Records Management
Enterprise search and content
analytics promise to find everything,
without structure and without
organized metadata.

Due to legal and regulatory
requirements
– and the natural human need to
organize large sets of objects –
records management is here to stay.
Metadata, control, security,
processes and quality are attributes
of records management and
information governance solutions.

Automation
&
The Change in
Work

The office is the last place in the
enterprise that has not yet been
automated.
Automation is the key to overcoming
the bottleneck of information entry,
media gaps, information provision,
process control, and individual
proficiency.

Business process management and
automatic classification & indexing are key
components of modern ECM systems.
Self-learning workflow solutions offer an
additional challenge.
But they must be enriched by collaborative
functionality.
Otherwise they will end up non-transparent,
static, hard-wired, and inflexible.

A differentiation is needed -
all big data is not created equal:
• Big Data – An information storage
& management problem
• Big Data – Analytics and predictive
analytics
• Big Content … do we really need this
differentiation?
It‘s all data, right?

The Gartner Hypecycle 2015: Big Data

Big data offers new ways to use
information:
• Dynamic generation of views and
context during runtime
• Analyzing information beyond
predefined structures
• Automization of classification processes
• Generating context and relations in
workflows and collaboration

But
– although mainly unstructured –
big data collections and results of
analytics must be stored and
managed.
