We are here to seek further bestowals from Allah SWT, especially
to benefit from knowledge which we may have already possess, as
well as to gain further beneficial knowledge from Allah SWT.
Indeed, before we can derive further benefit and bestowals, we
must first recognize and be thankfully appreciative of every favors
given to us by Allah SWT. For, we are not merely to be servants of
Allah as Muslims (who submit and obey), but most importantly as
“GRATEFUL servants of Allah” -

religion, singled us out for His creed, and directed us onto the

events in the SEERAH (Life of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w.)
and commemorate these events as expression of gratitude as well
as to reflect upon the many important lessons to be learnt from
them.
Amongst the most significant, as indicated in the verse, was that
this RAMADHAN was the month in which the Quran was sent
down; the first time Muhammad s.a.a.w. had a direct encounter
with Divine revelation, which transformed him to begin his life as
the last of the prophets sent by Allah SWT for mankind.

- 12. The topic that I was originally given to speak on was (publicized) as:
“The Miracle of the Last Revelation”
Presumably, since we would be commemorating the night of the
revelation of the Qur’an - “NUZUL AL-QUR’AN”, this theme seems
relevant and apt.
And most lectures in mosques, or gatherings like this, would
inevitably focus upon the significance of this event or highlighting
certain fascinating aspects of the event and teachings from the
Qur’an.
There are so much to speak about regarding the Qur’an. The
dilemma and challenge is to choose the most appropriate theme.

- 13. Although many know the Prophetic command “ convey from me
even if it be one Aayat (sign or verse) ”, yet, this should depend upon
whom the audience are, their level and state (HAAL), and what do
we wish to educate them on and why we think the chosen topic is
(needed) necessary.
Though one may have much knowledge, in sharing knowledge and in
educating, we are to follow the Prophetic wisdom:
“ we are to speak to people in accordance with their intellectual level .”
Traditional teachers (Islamic scholars) from whom I was tutored,
always teach only what is needed, not necessarily what is wanted.

- 14. When I reflected upon the given topic: “ The Miracle of the Last
Revelation” , I had several concerns.
Allow me to explain:
[1] In my opinion, the English word “Miracle” is problematic because we
need to critically ask the question: “what do we mean by a ‘miracle’
from an Islamic – Qur’anic perspective?” What Arabic word is this
translation referring to?
This is because, oftentimes there are many different terminologies in
the Arabic which may have be translated into English rather loosely,
grouped using a single word, thereby the subtle difference and
significance regarding the issue being discussed would be lost.

- 15. When I reflected upon the given topic: “ The Miracle of the Last
Revelation” , I had several concerns.
Allow me to explain:
[2] Are we equating the general notion of ‘miracle’ as popularly used,
which may even include magic, sorcery, trickery etc. or anything
regarded as extra-ordinary? Surely aspects of Islam cannot be
allowed to be relegated to such. What is the equivalent Arabic-
Qur’anic terminology that we are referring to here ?
[3] Also, “the Last Revelation” may be assumed by many to merely refer
to the Al-Qur’an, alone. This is misleading and incorrect !
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
- 17. MIRACLES
The term used for this in Islam is “KHAARIQ
AL-’AADAH” – meaning “breaking from the normal order; exceeding
the customary; unusual; extra-ordinary; unprecedented; miracle; etc.”
So, this term for “miracle” as in the Arabic, has as general meaning to
include many kinds of extra-ordinary acts which can be demonstrated by
all kinds of people.
The term which is relevant in our discussion here is – MU’JIZAT – which if
translated also as “miracle” is inaccurate or may even be misleading.
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
- 18. MIRACLES
Islam uses various different and specific Arabic terms to “miracles”,
bestowed or worked by different category of people, viz.
[a] MU’JIZAT – bestowed only for Prophets of Allah
[b] KAROMAH – bestowed for the saints (AWLIYA’) of Allah
[c] MA-’UNAH - Divine bestowal for the righteous believers
[d] ISTIDRAJ - extra-ordinary capabilities which can be learnt or granted to
people e.g. magic, sorcery, or coincidences which bring peope away
from believing in Allah.
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
- 19. MIRACLES
Thus, Islam even warns the Muslims not to generalize as though all
“miracles” are therefore the “MU’-JIZAT”, because Islam has clarified
these by using different terms for different types of miracles.
Actually, the Arabic term MU’JIZAT, literally does not mean “miracle”
Too often, Muslims who read in English, may not know the erroneous
misapplication (translation) of this term – MU’JIZAT.
Understanding the difference in the actual meaning of this terminology
vis-à-vis in the Qur’anic-Arabic, is very important to dispel this
confusion.
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
- 20. MU’-JIZAT
From the word “I’-JAZ” meaning to “bring low” –
refers to extra-ordinary capability given to most prophets by Allah, as
Signs or proof of their Prophet hood.
Usually, it would approximate and challenge what people of the time
had already regarded to be the most fantastic which they are capable
of. Something being offered or demonstrated as proof, so that their
people may recognize and test the claim of the prophet .
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2011)
- 21. MU’-JIZAT
But, the ‘proof’ is not merely that it fascinates and is regarded as
fantastic, but because it is something that “no one else can ever
replicate it” - for they who contends with it or tries to deny it,
will be “brought low” (I’-JAZ) i.e. refuted by their own inability
and impotency in the face of it.

Allah (God). On the contrary it is a confirmation of

- 25. To the Arabs at the time of Muhammad s.a.w. then, it
was their language (Arabic), linguistic and literary skills
in composing odes and poetry which were held in
highest regard.
This was their greatest accomplishment, which they
have honed and it marked them out as Arabs.
And it is to this that the ‘miraculous’ nature of the
Qur’an was highlighted to them to be especially tested.

Musaylama al-Kadz-dzab,

attempted but could not succeed. Not only this, their
attempts were even denounced by their own peers, when
they compared them to the style, eloquence, exquisite
beauty and profoundness of the Qur’an.

declined since that golden era. Thus it would become near
impossible for any to respond to this challenge ever again.
One well known poet at the time, Walid ibn Mughirah
(himself a respected leader of the Quraysh), even admitted
to his peers, after hearing Muhammad’s recitation of a
portion of the Qur’an saying, that these could not be the
work of mortals - whether it be of man or spirits – echoing

- 45. Let me now explain my concern regarding phrase “ Last Revelation”.
Many may assume simplistically that it refers to Al-Qur’an. Perhaps
they are unaware of the linguistic difference in the words used:
“the Revelation (from God) ” as in the term – “ WAHYI ”
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
- 46. Amongst the many WAHYI - which Prophet Muhammad
s.a.a.w. received from Allah SWT is the Book (Revealed from God)” with
the specific term being “AL-KITAB” , when referring to Al-Qur’an.
Although the Qur’an is the Book of Revelation, but not all the Revelation
which the Prophet received, is in this Qur’an.
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
- 47. Whereas the term a “Prophet” NABIY : is a person who
receives revelations, Divine inspirations - WAHYI from
Allah – not necessarily in the form of KITAB –
Therefore, by the phrase the “Last Revelation” , rightly it should be
referring to the phenomena of Prophethood (NUBUWWAT) itself,
rather than only to the Book - Al- Qur’an.
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
- 48. And one of the essential message stressed in Islam is that
Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. was the Last or Seal in the line of
Prophets sent by Allah for mankind. The main focus for inviting
people to Islam is : to accept the Muhammad s.a.a.w., as the
Prophet and Messenger of Allah, not merely about the Qur’an.

- 50. It is unfortunate that many Muslims are approaching the learning of
Islam as subjects (Islamic studies), whereas we are to subject
ourselves to Islam with its teachings and message. This would
require an educator, following a structured curriculum, going
through stages and (spiritual) levels gradually, with appropriate
guidance of Islamic teachers.
In our eagerness to learn many beautiful aspects of Islam, we must
keep in view this – termed as ADAB. Remember, Allah SWT did not
merely sent the Qur’an to be freely used by just anybody. He sent
first the teacher who was also tasked to teach, clarify and educate
with the Qur’an, a whole way of life - AD-DEEN.
