nurture, good manners, refinement, cultured, decorum, courteous,
etiquette, propriety, social grace, to educate, discipline, the
humanities, etc.” sense of proportion and knowledge of their rightful
place in the order of things, the absence of which indicates injustice

“NOW [as for thee, O Muhammad,] We have not sent thee
otherwise than the whole of mankind (KAA-FAH LIN-NAAS), to be
a bearer of glad tidings (BASHIRA) and a warner (NADZIRA); but
most people do not understand [this],”
(Qur’an: Saba’: 34: 28)

SubHaa-nAllah! This verse enumerated an important point which
Allah highlighted for us to be attentive to since to Allah, these are
things ... “that most people do not know!”
What are they? What then is our obligation and responsibility as
Muslims? Regarding these:
 “Muhammad is the Universal Messenger” – has his message been
conveyed?
 “Bearer of Glad Tidings – the Good news” – what good news?
 “ To Warn Mankind” – so to warn mankind of what?

“We have never sent any messenger save that he should
be obeyed (heeded) by Allah’s leave (permission).
If, then, after having sinned against themselves, they
would but come round to thee (O Muhammad) and ask
Allah to forgive them - with the Messenger, too, praying
that they be forgiven - they would assuredly find that
Allah is an acceptor of repentance, a dispenser of grace.”
(Qur’an: Nisa’: 4: 64)

There are many command from Allah for us to obey the Prophet
s.a.w. As every prophets sent were meant to be obeyed by Allah’s
permission.
For our Prophet s.a.w., in this verse Allah highlighted the fact that
his Du’a as intercession to seek Allah’s forgiveness to those who
requested him to do so, is guaranteed fulfilment. SubHaa-nAllah!
As Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. is the last of the prophets,
therefore this verse still remains relevant.

“AND ALL WHO obey Allah and the messenger are in the
company of those on whom is the Grace of Allah,- of the
NABIYYIN - prophets (who teach), the SwIDDIQEEN sincere (lovers of Truth), the SHUHADAA’- witnesses (who
testify), and the SwOLIHEEN - Righteous (who do good):
Ah! what a beautiful fellowship!”
(Qur’an: Nisa’: 4: 69)

A Muslim’s obedience to Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Is the
gateway towards being included amongst the fellowship and
company with every saintly and righteous souls – of the Prophets
(NABIYYIN), the Truthful (SwIDDIQEEN) , the Martyrs (SHUHADA’) and
the Righteous (SwOLIHEEN).
This fellowship is not physical but connects us with the spiritual
and angelic realm, transcending the physical , time and space. Indeed,
this message ought to be contemplated by present Muslims,
especially those distracted and deceived by the worldly materialistic
glitters surrounding our life. Remember: “ We are in this world, but we
are not of this world!”

“AND OBEY Allah and the Messenger, so that you might be
graced with mercy.!”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 132)

We tend to forget that we are constantly in sin, if not knowingly
but mostly unknowingly through heedlessness.
Thus actually, we are much in need of Allah’s Mercy and
forgiveness. The condition to deserve this is obedience to Allah and
His Messenger Muhammad s.a.w.
It is as though Allah is highlighting the fact that those who chose
to disobey are indeed arrogant and proud, as though they do not
need Allah’s grace and Mercy.
O how foolish we are to be as such !

“O you who have attained to faith! Remain conscious of
(and fear) Allah, and [always] speak with a will to bring out
[only] what is just and true -[whereupon] He (Allah) will
cause your deeds to be virtuous, and will forgive you your
sins. And [know that] whoever obeys (pays heed unto)
Allah and His Messenger has already attained to a mighty
triumph.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 70-71)

To be able to obey Allah and His Messenger Muhammad s.a.a.w.
Is already regarded as

“

“ – FAUZAN AZEEM (Tremendous

Triumph; great success; etc.).
This point must be noted so as to set aside “ doubts and
hesitations” which certain Muslims entertain when called to do what
is right according to SHARI’IAH.
Some people still use their own reasoning, logic or succumb to
“pragmatism” of trying to please others when called to act
Islamically. This is because, in their estimation, the result or outcome
may seemed to be unfavourable, they therefore justify their not
attempting to carry out a command of Allah.

This itself is evidence of ‘hypocrisy ‘ (NIFAQ) in their hearts; a
cowardly attitude devoid of true sincerity (IKHLAS) in upholding
the Deen, as commanded:

“And they were not commanded except to serve (worship)
Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth “
(Qur’an: Bayyinat: 98: 5)

We should reflect upon this verse deeply, and always check our
motive and intention (both for not doing as well as when doing
deeds in life).

“AND OBEY Allah and His Messenger, and do not [allow yourselves to]
be at variance with one another, lest you lose heart and your moral
strength desert you. And be patient in adversity: for, verily, Allah is
with those who are patient in adversity.”
(Qur’an: Anfal: 8: 46)

Obedience to Allah and His Messenger is the common
denominator for Muslims’ unity and strength. Indeed, this
fundamental principle is the essence of what a Muslim should be.
Yet, differences and disputes, especially in matters of religion do
occur because of hypocricy, jealousy and conceit. The hidden motive
lies in people’s heart - for not every Muslim are automatically a
Mu’meen.
The strength of the Ummah (Muslim community) is in the quality
of its Muslims’ submission. Its weakness is the quarrelling,
disputations and enmity of the ignorant and the insincere. Yet, the
true believers must strive to remain steadfast and patient.

“O you who have attained to faith! Obey (pay heed unto)
Allah, and obey (pay heed unto) the Messenger and unto
those from among you who have been entrusted with
authority; and if you are at variance over any matter, refer it
unto Allah and the Messenger, if you [truly] believe in Allah
and the Last Day. This is the best [for you], and best in the
end.”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa: 4: 59)

Allah already knew that differences will occur, and thus this verse.
Yet, despite of this clear directive, it has not resolve the disunity
amongst many Muslims. The reason perhaps is because, to be able to
conform such, the Muslims must be Believers ( MU’-MINEEN), in Allah
and the Hereafter (AKHIRAH).
Alas, with hypocrisy and insincerity; the influence of worldly and
materialism; exacerbated by ignorance and ‘lost’ identity amongst
Muslims – many are in fact opposing this verse. It is perhaps because
they do not feel the ‘presence’ (existence) of the Prophet s.a.a.w. In
their life, as how the SAHABAH (companions of Prophet) felt.

“Remain, then, conscious of Allah (and fear Him – TAQWA),
and keep alive the bonds of brotherhood among yourselves,
and obey (pay heed) unto Allah and His Messenger, if you are
[truly] believers! (MU’-MINEEN)”
(Qur’an: Anfal: 8: 1)

“Say: Obey Allah and the Messenger.” And if they turn away verily, Allah does not love those who deny the truth (KAAFIRIN).”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 32)

“But nay, by thy Sustainer! They do not [really] believe unless they
make thee [O Prophet] a judge of all on which they disagree among
themselves, and then find in their hearts no bar to an acceptance of
thy decision and give themselves up [to it] in utter self-surrender.”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 65)

“Now whenever Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, it is not
for a believing man or a believing woman to claim freedom of choice
insofar as they themselves are concerned: for he who [thus] rebels against
Allah and His Messenger has already, most obviously, gone astray.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 36)

“O you who have attained to faith, obey (pay heed unto) Allah and His
Messenger, and do not turn away from Him now that you hear [His
message]; and be not like those who say, "We have heard", the while
they do not hearken.”
(Qur’an: Anfal: 8: 20-21)

“Verily, the vilest of all creatures in the sight of Allah are those deaf, those
dumb ones who do not use their reason. For, if Allah had seen any good in
them, He would certainly have made them hear: but [as it is,] even if He had
made them hear, they would surely have turned away in their obstinacy.”
(Qur’an: Anfal: 8: 22-23)

How do you “obey and follow”?
Whenever a matter has been decided by clear basis, especially
from authentic sources (Qur’an, As-Sunnah and teachings from a
competent Islamic scholars), do not entertain any doubts, but
discipline yourself to want to act upon it first.
Acquire those knowledge from the Qur’an and As-Sunnah which
leads us toward acting upon them, especially on obligatory matters.
In this way, we diminish our ‘intellectual ego’ from being conceited,
for most of us forget that “to follow is not merely to know and
narrate, but to act upon his teachings in ourselves .”

An important reminder of our Prophet s.a.w.:

“What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered you
[to do], do as much of it as you can. It was only their excessive
questioning and their disagreeing with their Prophets that
destroyed those who came before you.”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary & Muslim)

Actually, Muslims are already taught ‘Adab ’ in following the
Prophet from the categorization of “Hukm taklifi ” and Fiqh :
[1] Fardh ‘ain before Fardh kifaaya;
[2] Wajib before mandub (sunnat );
[3] Removing harm (mafsadah, or mungkar) has priority over
bringing new benefit (maslahat);
[4] That which is near or closest, before the far and the distant;
[5] Concern for our shortcomings rather than relishing or indulging in
self-praise;
[6] Aakhirah (eternal Hereafter ) has precedence over Dunya
(temporal world). etc.

“Say [O Prophet]: "If you love Allah, follow me, [and] Allah will
love you and forgive you your sins; for Allah is much-forgiving, a
dispenser of grace.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 31)

"Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have
forgotten or erred.
Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which
You laid upon those before us.
Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no
ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have
mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory
over the disbelieving people."

“O Allah, make my speech be guidance, inspire me with
reverential fear, give me success in that which is most
pure, and employ me in what is most pleasing to Thee!
O Allah, let me tread the most exemplary path and make
me live and die in Thy creed!
O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household, give me to
enjoy moderation, make me into one of the people of
right behaviour, the proofs of right conduct, and the
servants of righteousness,"

O Allah! Make faith (iiman) dear to us and beautify it in our hearts
and make disbelief (Kufr), sinning (Fusuq) and rebelliousness (`isyan)
hateful to us, and make us among the rightly guided ( Raa-shi-duun).

O Allah! Allow us to die as Muslims, live as Muslims
and join us with the ranks of the righteous ones,
without tasting humiliation or turmoil.

and upon the household and companions of Muhammad
(the pure ones of his family and all the loyal followers).

(He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)!
And Peace on the Messengers!

  • 18. “We have never sent any messenger save that he should be obeyed (heeded) by Allah’s leave (permission).   • 19. There are many command from Allah for us to obey the Prophet s.a.w. As every prophets sent were meant to be obeyed by Allah’s permission. For our Prophet s.a.w., in this verse Allah highlighted the fact that his Du’a as intercession to seek Allah’s forgiveness to those who requested him to do so, is guaranteed fulfilment.   • 22. A Muslim’s obedience to Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Is the gateway towards being included amongst the fellowship and company with every saintly and righteous souls – of the Prophets (NABIYYIN), the Truthful (SwIDDIQEEN) , the Martyrs (SHUHADA’) and the Righteous (SwOLIHEEN). This fellowship is not physical but connects us with the spiritual and angelic realm, transcending the physical , time and space. Indeed, this message ought to be contemplated by present Muslims, especially those distracted and deceived by the worldly materialistic glitters surrounding our life.   • 24. We tend to forget that we are constantly in sin, if not knowingly but mostly unknowingly through heedlessness. Thus actually, we are much in need of Allah’s Mercy and forgiveness. The condition to deserve this is obedience to Allah and His Messenger Muhammad s.a.w. It is as though Allah is highlighting the fact that those who chose to disobey are indeed arrogant and proud, as though they do not need Allah’s grace and Mercy. O how foolish we are to be as such !   • 26. “O you who have attained to faith! Remain conscious of (and fear) Allah, and [always] speak with a will to bring out [only] what is just and true -[whereupon] He (Allah) will cause your deeds to be virtuous, and will forgive you your sins.   • 27. To be able to obey Allah and His Messenger Muhammad s.a.a.w. Is already regarded as “ “ – FAUZAN AZEEM (Tremendous Triumph; great success; etc.). This point must be noted so as to set aside “ doubts and hesitations” which certain Muslims entertain when called to do what is right according to SHARI’IAH. Some people still use their own reasoning, logic or succumb to “pragmatism” of trying to please others when called to act Islamically. This is because, in their estimation, the result or outcome may seemed to be unfavourable, they therefore justify their not attempting to carry out a command of Allah. This itself is evidence of ‘hypocrisy ‘ (NIFAQ) in their hearts; a cowardly attitude devoid of true sincerity (IKHLAS) in upholding the Deen, as commanded: “And they were not commanded except to serve (worship) Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth “ (Qur’an: Bayyinat: 98: 5) We should reflect upon this verse deeply, and always check our motive and intention (both for not doing as well as when doing deeds in life).   • 29. “AND OBEY Allah and His Messenger, and do not [allow yourselves to] be at variance with one another, lest you lose heart and your moral strength desert you.   • 30. Obedience to Allah and His Messenger is the common denominator for Muslims’ unity and strength. Indeed, this fundamental principle is the essence of what a Muslim should be. Yet, differences and disputes, especially in matters of religion do occur because of hypocricy, jealousy and conceit. The hidden motive lies in people’s heart - for not every Muslim are automatically a Mu’meen. The strength of the Ummah (Muslim community) is in the quality of its Muslims’ submission. Its weakness is the quarrelling, disputations and enmity of the ignorant and the insincere. Yet, the true believers must strive to remain steadfast and patient.   • 32. “O you who have attained to faith! Obey (pay heed unto) Allah, and obey (pay heed unto) the Messenger and unto those from among you who have been entrusted with authority; and if you are at variance over any matter, refer it unto Allah and the Messenger, if you [truly] believe in Allah and the Last Day.   • 33. Allah already knew that differences will occur, and thus this verse. Yet, despite of this clear directive, it has not resolve the disunity amongst many Muslims. The reason perhaps is because, to be able to conform such, the Muslims must be Believers ( MU’-MINEEN), in Allah and the Hereafter (AKHIRAH). Alas, with hypocrisy and insincerity; the influence of worldly and materialism; exacerbated by ignorance and ‘lost’ identity amongst Muslims – many are in fact opposing this verse. It is perhaps because they do not feel the ‘presence’ (existence) of the Prophet s.a.a.w. In their life, as how the SAHABAH (companions of Prophet) felt.   • 36. “But nay, by thy Sustainer!   • 39. “Verily, the vilest of all creatures in the sight of Allah are those deaf, those dumb ones who do not use their reason.   • 40. How do you “obey and follow”? Whenever a matter has been decided by clear basis, especially from authentic sources (Qur’an, As-Sunnah and teachings from a competent Islamic scholars), do not entertain any doubts, but discipline yourself to want to act upon it first. Acquire those knowledge from the Qur’an and As-Sunnah which leads us toward acting upon them, especially on obligatory matters.   • 41. An important reminder of our Prophet s.a.w.: “What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered you [to do], do as much of it as you can. Actually, Muslims are already taught ‘Adab ’ in following the Prophet from the categorization of “Hukm taklifi ” and Fiqh : [1] Fardh ‘ain before Fardh kifaaya; [2] Wajib before mandub (sunnat ); [3] Removing harm (mafsadah, or mungkar) has priority over bringing new benefit (maslahat); [4] That which is near or closest, before the far and the distant; [5] Concern for our shortcomings rather than relishing or indulging in self-praise; [6] Aakhirah (eternal Hereafter ) has precedence over Dunya (temporal world). etc. All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2013)
