Openness is a tool that can enable scalable and sustainable solutions for education through open educational resources, MOOCs, and textbooks. Three examples are provided: 1) Lumen Learning, an open textbook publisher; 2) a digital ecosystem for collaborative and open textbook production in Latin America; and 3) using accredited MOOCs to train 30,000 Ecuadorian teachers in 5 years due to their ability to scale. In conclusion, openness provides advantages over traditional models and should be used to enable innovative solutions for education if trust in open approaches can be gained through success stories.
