This document provides commentary on the Parable of the Sower and Seed from the Bible. It summarizes the parable, in which a sower scatters seed and it falls in different types of ground, some growing and some not. It explains that the seed represents the word of God and the different types of ground represent different types of people who hear the word. It then provides verse-by-verse commentary on the parable as told in Matthew 13.
1. The parable of the sower and the seed
To understand why the Parables show up we need to get the context from
chapter 12. The Messiah has come Mat 12:1; He has identified Himself as
the Son of David Mat 12:3; He has proved it with signs and wonders
Mat12:13; and He has been rejected and called a devil Mat 12:24; In the
middle of the chapter we see a warning that God is going to deal with
Gentiles Mat 12:21.
There are 12 parables that illustrate "the mysteries of the kingdom of
heaven (v.11)"
7 of them are in this chapter.
The three that apply to the Body of Christ (as well as the kingdom of heaven
in the future) are:
Parable of the Sower and the Seed
the Mustard Seed
the Leaven
The other 5 are Mat18:23-35; 20:1-16; 22:2-14; 25:1-13; 25:14-30
Because some the these parables match those of the "mysteries of the
kingdom of God (Mark4:11 Luke8:10 Mat13:11) the scholars apply all of
them to the church age in error.
Every Jew in the OT and the Gospels knew that when the kingdom came, it
would come to Israel (Acts1:6) And when it came it would be by military
force overthrowingan earthlygovernment (Ps83:1-8 Isa24:1-23 Jer25:15-38
Dan2:44-45, 7:9-14 Joel3:9-17)
It was the church age that was a mystery Eph3:1-9 .
The only way for a Jew in this age to get a kingdom is to go through a
spiritual kingdom first (John3:3-5)
So in these parables, Christ is illustrating the Kingdom of Heaven in the
Church Age, in its mystery form Mat13:14
2. Matthew 13
The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. Mark
4:1; Luke 8:4-5;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:1
vv.1-3) The Sower is Christ. The interpretation of the parable is in vv. 18-
23.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he
went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. Luke
5:3; 3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a
sower went forth to sow; 4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way
side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:4
The “seed”is the word of God. These “fowls” are devils according to v. 19,
“…then cometh the wicked one…” See Mark 4:3,4,15 . There are winged
fowls inhabiting a “lake of fire” in Isaiah 34:9-15
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and
forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:5
The first class of hearers are lost people that hear the word of God, but
remain lost (Pilate, Herod, etc.). The devil’s target is the word of God
because it is the seed that can bring forth life. He does not want the seed to
be sown. If it is sown, then he will come and try to catch it away that it
might not bring forth fruit.
*The only thing that you can spend money on that will not burn is the
soul of a SAVED MAN.
*The interpretation is in vv.20-21. The man hears but does not get saved.
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had
no root, they witheredaway.
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:6
no staying power with out a good understanding (root)
Mat13:13 Luke9:62 Prov24:21 Acts15:38 Hos4:6 Jas1:8
3. The second class of hearers are lost, but they look saved (like Judas
Iscariot). Christ is the “Root of David (Rev. 5:5 ).” These had NO Root in
them.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked
them:
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:7
The third class are saved people that are not bringing forth fruit (Demas-2
Tim. 4:10 ). The interpretation is in v.22, “…becometh unfruitful…”
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an
hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:8
The forth class are saved people that are bringing forth fruit, but in different
degrees.
See Rev. 17:14 and the disciples of Christ (120 in upper room in Acts 1, but
12 are closer, but 3 are closest).
(Rev 17:14) These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of
lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
“some thirty” – “called” – the 120
“some sixty” – “chosen” – the 12
“some an hundred” – “faithful” – the 3
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:9
vv.9-11) The people that were near to Jesus understood the parables. But for the ones
that did not get close to them, “The Light rejected becomes LIGHTENING!”
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto
them in parables? Mark4:10; Luke 8:9; 11 He answeredand said unto
them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom
of heaven, but to them it is not given. Matt 11:25; 2Cor 3:14;
4. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more
abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken awayeven
that he hath. Matt 25:29; Mark 4:24-25; Luke 8:18; Luke 19:26;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:12
A man that approaches the Bible honestly will receive light and
understanding on the scriptures (John 7:17 ). As this man submits himself
to the word of God and receives the truth that is revealed to him, then God
will give him more and more light. However, when a man will not receive
the light that he has been shown, then God will allow that man to become
messed up by the very same Book that could have led him to salvation (Ps.
46 ). The Bible is a two-edged sword. Be careful with it. Do not approach
it as a man that is trying to prove what he ALREADY believes. Approach it
with an honest heart and a willingness to change your own personal beliefs,
if you find yourself contrary to sound doctrine.
v.13) This is chapter 13 and verse 13. The number 13 represents
REBELLION in the Bible. It is normally connected with a bad reference.
Here it is connected to men that hear the word of God and do not understand
it. BAD reference.
*The only time that the Bible records Jesus Christ rejoicing is when things
were hidden from proud, self-righteous, religious people (Luke 10:21 ).
13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not;
and hearingthey hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is
fulfilledthe prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearingye shall hear, and
shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: Isa 6:9;
Mark 4:12; Luke 8:10; John 12:40; Acts 28:26; Rom 11:8;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:14
The quote is from Isaiah 6:9-10.
15 For this people's heart is waxedgross, and their ears are dull of
hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see
with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understandwith their
heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:15
5. This quote is the first of four in the NT that are almost exactly the same (the
others are John 12:40 ; Acts 28:27 ; Rom. 11:8 ). We would be wise to pay
attention to the most quoted verse in the NT other than Jesus Christ’s quote
on hell. There is no problem with the intellectual understanding in the
MINDS of these men. The problems are pride and dishonesty in the
HEARTS of these men. That is what causes them to miss the simple and
plain truths in the word of God (Ezek. 14:3,9 Jer17:9, Ps140:1-2, Jam4:1 ).
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
Luke 10:23; John 20:29; 1Pet 1:8;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:16
Jesus Christ explains two parables in the chapter (“The Sower” and the
“Tares and the Wheat”). Both of these parables had very, specific and plain
meanings. The most educated theologians and Bible teachers say that
parables only teach “general truths,” and they do not give the meanings of
“specific things.” This is clearly a lie. See Proverbs 26:7-9 .
17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men
have desiredto see those things which ye see, and have not seen them;
and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heardthem. 1Pet
1:10;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:17
The OT prophets could not understand the separation between the Two
Advents of Christ because the Lord would not reveal it to them (1 Pet. 1:10-
12 ).
the exposition of it
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. Mark 4:13; Luke 8:11;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:18
The following verses give the meaning of the parable of “The Sower.”
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth
it not, then cometh the wickedone, and catcheth away that which was
sown in his heart. This is he which receivedseed by the way side. Matt 4:23;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:19
6. 2Cor3:12
Notice that he did not UNDERSTAND the word. This is why it is very
important that as witnesses on a personal level and as preachers on a public
level that we present the word of God in the clearest and most
understandable way possible.
20 But he that receivedthe seed into stony places, the same is he that
heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:20
“Anon” = forthwith, Mrk1:29-30
21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when
tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is
offended.
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:21
This man had no root and the Root is usually Jesus Christ. Persecution for
“the word’s sake” offends many Christian brethren easily. It makes you
curious as to whether they have the Root or not.
Ps119:165
22 He also that receivedseed among the thorns is he that heareth the
word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the
word, and he becometh unfruitful. Matt 19:23; Mark 10:23; Luke 18:24;
1Tim 6:9;
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:22
This verse (if compared with the account in Mark 4:19) mentions three
things that are great enemies of the word of God:
1. The Cares of the World,
2. The Deceitfulness of Riches,
3. Lusts of Other Things.
Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when
they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and
pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
7. 23 But he that receivedseed into the good ground is he that heareth
the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth
forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
My Verse-notes - Matthew 13:23
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS MAN AND THE OTHERS IS
UNDERSTANDING! The word you preach should be clear, plain, and
understandable.an hundredfold= patience in obedience to the word :
Mark4:20 Luke8:15 Gen 26:12; 2Sam24:3 ; John15:5-8
Three types of christian: Rev 12:11 Rev 17:14
The 12 disciples= 30fold
The 3 disciples=60fold
John= 100fold; he is next to the Lord's heart at all times, with a clear
conscience, and goes through the trial to the cross itself ( John13:23-25;
18:15-17; 19:25-17 )
