1. THE PROVERBS
About the author
(1Kgs 4:29-32) And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart,
even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
30) And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom
of Egypt.
31) For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons
of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.
32) And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
(Prov 1:1) The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel (25:1)
There are approximately 375 proverbs written down in Proverbs. Therefore, it is
obvious that not all of his proverbs have been preserved in one book, but an
innumerable amount have been given in Christ (Col. 2:3) and preserved in 66
books.
(Col 2:2) That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full
assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of
Christ;
3) In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
About the book of Proverbs
Fool vs. Wise [disjunctive conjunction]
(Prov 3:35) The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
(Prov 10:1) The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of
his mother.
(Prov 10:8) The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.
(Prov 10:14) Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
(Prov 10:23) It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
(Prov 12:16) A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.
(Prov 12:23) A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
(Prov 14:16) A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

2. (Prov 14:33) Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of
fools is made known.
(Prov 28:26) He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
The theme of the book
(Prov 1:5) A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto
wise counsels:
(Prov 1:1) The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2) To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3) To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4) To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

(Prov 1:5) A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto
wise counsels:
6) To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

Prerequisite for advise
(Prov 1:7) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Knowledge= the fearof the Lord
(Job 28:28) And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from
evil is understanding.
Wisdom= the fearof the Lord
Understanding=to depart from evil
(Prov 9:10) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is
understanding.
Wisdom= the Fearof the Lord
Understanding=knowledgeof the holy
(Ps 111:10) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they
that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
Wisdom 101= the fearof the Lord
Good understanding= do His commandments (his commandments are to keep you from evil)
(Ps 119:98-104) Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they
are ever with me.

3. 99) I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
100) I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
101) I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. (Ps. 51:11)
102) I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.
103) How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104) Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
(Prov 1:7) … but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Fool= one who despises: the fearof the Lord, to depart from evil, knowledge of the holy, and His commandments {has a
problem with authority}
Solomon’s plea
(Prov 1:8) My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
9) For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
(Prov 15:5) A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
Hear the instruction, not follow the example-yourparents may have had to learn the hard way, ormaybe even
now are ‘holden with the chains of iniquity and sin’ [pr. 5:22]
An ornamentisdesignedtomake youstandoutfromthe crowd.
(Jer 2:32) Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me
days without number.
(Prov 25:12) As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an
obedient ear.

(1Pet 3:4) But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the
ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
(1Thess 4:11) And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your
own hands, as we commanded you;
(Prov 17:28) Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is
esteemed a man of understanding.
(1Tim 2:9) In like manner [man and woman] also, that women adorn themselves in modest
apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly
array;
Modest apparel, not speakingwhen youcould gives Godroom to decorate.
(Prov 4:9) She [wisdom] shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she
deliver to thee.
(1Pet 5:2-4) Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by
constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

4. 3) Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4) And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not
away.
