A Series on the Sermon on the Mount
"Judge Not... Seek God’s Way”
September 11, 2016
Matthew 7:1-12
The World’s Perspective on Judging Others:
Judging to FIX people
This fails because:
1. It doesn’t flow from a heart of love
2. It can be received as an attack
3. “Tearing down” without “building up”
4. Our judgment may be (and often is) wrong
2. Judging in order to FEEL BETTER about ourselves
When we judge others, we feel superior to them
Judging puts us on the moral high ground and diminishes those
we are judging
Judgmental people either feel the worst about themselves or
mostly deny their own weaknesses.
The secret to learning how to dispense with judging others is by
asking, seeking, and finding God’s way.
Jesus’ Perspective on Judging Others:
If you judge someone,be prepared to be judged in return
Matthew 7:1-6
1
“Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2
You’ll receive the
same judgment you give. Whatever you deal out will be dealt out to
you.
3
Why do you see the splinter that’s in your brother’s or sister’s eye,
but don’t notice the log in your own eye? 4
How can you say to your
brother or sister, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ when
there’s a log in your eye?
5
You deceive yourself! First take the log out of your eye, and then
you’ll see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s or
sister’s eye.6
Don’t give holy things to dogs, and don’t throw your
pearls in front of pigs. They will stomp on the pearls, then turn
around and attack you.
Don’t Judge… Seek God’s Way
Matthew 7:7-11
7 “Ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and
the door will be opened to you. 8
For everyone who asks, receives.
Whoever seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door is
opened. 9
Who among you will give your children a stone when they
ask for bread? 10
Or give them a snake when they ask for fish? 11
If
you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how
much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who
ask him.
Treat others as you would like to be treated
Matthew 7:12
12
Therefore, you should treat people in the same way that you want
people to treat you; this is the Law and the Prophets.
For Personal and Group Reflection
1. One sign that you are a judgmental person is gossip. Do you talk
about others in less than edifying ways outside of their presence?
3. 2. If we are judged harshly by others for our convictions how do we
avoid returning the favor?
3. What keeps you from asking God for help?
4. How have you primarily imaged God in your past? King, Judge,
Father, other? What makes it hard for you to relate to God as an
intimate Father? How does your image of God affect your attitudes
toward others?

Jesus is the Question
by Martin B. Copenhaver
Jesus is the Question considers the
questions Jesus asks—what they tell
us about Jesus and, more importantly, what our responses might say
about what it means to follow Him.
5. Through Jesus’ questions, he modeled the struggle,
the wondering, the thinking it through that helps us
draw
closer to God and better understand, not just the
answer,
but ourselves.
The class is taught by Don Morgan

you free from the constant pressure to perform faster, push harder,
and produce more, all while maintaining
an exhausting image of perfection.
