A Look at the Heart and Mind of Jesus
A Sermon Series on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12)
Why “Giving Peace a Chance”
May Not Be the Best Approach
Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Matthew 5:3-9
3
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. 4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6
Blessed are
those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be
filled.
7
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of
God.
SHALOM (A Hebrew greeting and farewell translated PEACE, with
an emphasis on “wholeness and fullness”)
It is the peacemakers -- those actively seeking the peace of God in
2. their lives and in our world, who are blessed children of God.
Colossians 3:12-17
12
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience. 13
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of
you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave
you. 14
And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all
together in perfect unity.
15
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of
one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16
Let the
message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish
one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from
the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17
And
whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of
the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Peacemakers actively seek peace for ALL people.
Matthew 5:43-47
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate
your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those
who persecute you, 45
that you may be children of your Father in
heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and
sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46
If you love
those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the
tax collectors doing that? 47
And if you greet only your own people,
what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
Christ is our peace… we can only make (extend) peace when we
have HIS peace in our own hearts.
Ephesians 2:13-16
13
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been
brought near by the blood of Christ. 14
For he himself is our peace,
who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the
dividing wall of hostility, 15
by setting aside in his flesh the law with
its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself
one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16
and in one
body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which
he
put to death their hostility.
Christian maturity does not demand its own way… mature
Christians seek to serve God and others!!
Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
“Lord, make me an instrument of YOUR peace”
For Personal or Group Reflection
1. Psalm 34:14 says, “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and
pursue it.” Can you think of one relationship in your life today where
you need to “seek peace and pursue it?”
2 Peace may not always mean the conflict gets resolved. It could
mean seeing past the conflict into the humanity of the other person
3. and making peace despite the unresolved conflict. Does that seem
possible to you? If not, good. Welcome the Holy Spirit into this
impossibility in a new way.
3. If Peace is the presence of God, what then does it mean to “seek
peace and pursue it?” What might it mean to pass the presence of
God to another? Reflect on that this week.

Primary June Needs
Thank you for your continued support of this worthy cause.
New Sunday School Study begins June 12
9. The Open Door Class invites you to
join us on June 12 for an 8-Week
Study of Paul’s letter to the
Philippians
Things don't always go the way we intend. It's
easy to feel discouraged because what we hope
for is badly thwarted, or because people make
life difficult. Paul, writing to the Philippians
from prison, certainly knew what it was like to
have plans interrupted. But he maintains robust
confidence in God's overruling power, even when
everything seems to be going wrong.
These eight studies will help us learn from Paul the art of seeing
God's
purposes working out through problems and difficulties, and will
deepen our own confidence in God's power.
New study begins on June 12 at 9:00 AM in Room 12. Contact Don
Morgan dsmorg2@comcast.net for book - $8.00.
“America is at a crossroads, and I believe we
should take every opportunity to stand up for the
things of God and His
Word.” –Franklin
Graham
Franklin Graham is traveling to all
50 states in 2016 to hold prayer
rallies, to preach the Gospel, and
to challenge believers to take a
stand and take action. He’ll be
urging Christians to vote, to live out
their faith in every part of their
lives, and to pray for our nation
10. just as Nehemiah cried out to God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem
and restore hope to His people.
Franklin Graham will be in Olympia at he State Capital grounds on
June 29 at 12:00 PM, and is asking all Christians in Washington to join
him as he prays for our nation and our state. If you are interested in
attending as a group, please contact the church office.
