11. LUKE 1:1-4
Many have undertaken to draw up an account
of the things that have been fulfilled among us,
just as they were handed down to us by those
who from the first were eyewitnesses & servants
of the word. With this in mind, since I myself
have carefully investigated everything from
the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly
account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
so that you may know the certainty of
the things you have been taught.
12. ACTS 1:1-4
In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about
all that Jesus began to do & to teach until the
day He was taken up to heaven, after giving
instructions through the Holy Spirit to the
apostles He had chosen. After His suffering,
He presented Himself to them & gave many
convincing proofs that He was alive.
He appeared to them over a period of
40 days & spoke about the kingdom of God.
15. LUKE’S PURPOSE
1. HISTORICAL
“For Acts the confirmation of historicity
is overwhelming…Any attempt to reject its
basic historicity even in matters of detail must
now appear absurd. Roman historians have
long taken it for granted.”
- Sherwin/White
17. LUKE’S PURPOSE
2. DIPLOMATIC
“He wanted to demonstrate…the early church
was a united church, that the peril of division
between Jewish & Samaritan Christians,
& between Jewish & Gentile Christians, was
providentially avoided, & that the apostles
Peter, James & Paul were in fundamental
agreement about the gospel.”
- John Stott
19. LUKE’S PURPOSE
3. THEOLOGICAL
“We call it „The Acts of The Apostles,‟
but in truth we should really think
of it as „The Acts of Jesus – Part II.”
- N.T. Wright
