3. INDICATORS OF OUTPUT
• Generally o/p is the the work done in a given
period of time.
• o/p in terms of cargo handling – quantity of
cargo handled in tonnes for a given stated
time, period of shift, month or year.
• Indicator of o/p is subdivided into :-
– Berth o/p
– Ship o/p
– Gang o/p
4. Berth O/p
• In general refers to berth through put.
• Berth throughput is the measure of cargo
handled at a berth in a stated period usually a
year – “Annual Berth Throughput”
• Berth o/p indicates how fully the berth
facilities are being used and exactly tells you
how many tonnes of cargo handled in a year.
• Berth throughput o/p and other measures of
berth o/p don’t’ indicate the cargo handling
efficiency because of all variable and
uncontrollable factors.
5. Ship O/P
• This measures the rate at which cargo is
handled two and from the vessel at berth.
• Ship o/p are clear indicators of cargo handling
operations.
• Ship o/p are handled in three ways:-
– Tonnes per ship working hour.
– Tonnes per ship hour at berth.
– Tonnes per ship hour at port.
6. Gang o/p
• The average tonnes of cargo handled in one
gang in one hour.
• Ship o/p & Berth o/p vary with increase in
gang employed. But gang o/p doesn’t vary.
• Gang o/p is a useful tool to measure labour
performance.
7. Indicator of Service
• There are many types of indicators to measure
the quality of service the port provides for its
users.
• The most commonly used indicators is ship
turn around time.
• Ships turn around time gives an excelllent
indication of the speed of service being
provided to ship operator. It is a very
important element in determining the
transport cost.
8. Indicator of utilization
• This tells us about how intensely the berth
facilities and resources are used.
• There are two components:-
– Berth occupancy
– Berth working time.
Berth working time
Part of ships time at a berth for which labor is
scheduled to work .
9. Berth occupancy
This effectively indicates the level of demand of port
services.
It can be measured in various time intervals, (a
week, a month , a year) and its normally
expressed in percentage.
10. Indicators of Productivity
• This indicates the cost effectiveness, i.e. the
cost per tonne of cargo handled.
11. Introduction
• Traditionally the performance of the port has been
evaluated by their actual and optimum throughputs.
(measured in tonnage or the no. of throughput
handled).
• A port may also use performance indicators to evaluate
its performance. If the port’s economic objective is to
maximize profits, port management would select
values for the port indicators that would result in the
maximization of the port’s profits. These indicator
values are the port’s performance indicator standards
(or benchmarks).
