Economy and Industry Profile
§ Textiles, diamond business, sugar industry, agro & food processing, paper, engineering and chemicals
are some of the key business sectors in Navsari
§ The district has well developed floriculture and horticulture activities owing to its suitable climate and
presence of a major player Best Roses Biotech Pvt. Ltd.
§ Best Roses has pioneered 6 hectare greenhouse project in the district which is the largest export-
oriented floriculture project in the State. The Company exports to countries such as, Japan, Germany
and UK, etc.
§ Other large players such as Gufic Biosciences Ltd., Tata Steel Ltd., and Mafatlal Industries are
present in the district
§ Navsari district is the largest producer of chikoo in the State and the largest exporter of the fruit in
India
§ The district has huge sugarcane fields as a result of which sugar manufacturing industry is a major
business in Maroli and Gandevi talukas of the district

§ In the year 2006-07, Navsari produced more than 2
lakh Metric Tonnes (MT) of fruits, around 1.20 lakh MT
of vegetables and approximately 4,187 MT of spices
§ Navsari is the largest producer of Chikoo
contributing 20 % to total State production and second
largest producer of mango with a share of 17% in
State production
§ Navsari is the largest producer of cucurbits among
vegetable crops contributing 17% to total State

investment of INR 377 crore (USD 90 million) generating employment for 9,057 persons

industries under SSIs present in Navsari are food products, metal products, chemicals and rubber and
plastic products manufacturing

§ As per the Industrial Entrepreneur Memoranda
(IEM) filed, the total number of units increased to
52 units during 1998-2007 from 42 units in 1988-97
§ Employment opportunities generated during
1998-2007 has doubled as compared to previous
decade (1988-97)
§ During 1998-2007, sectors such as machine tools,
chemicals and food processing industries
observed remarkable growth in investments with
highest growth observed in machine tools
§ Drugs & pharmaceuticals and vegetable oils
emerged as the new sectors attracting investments
during 1998-2007 of INR 31 crore (USD 7 million)
and INR 35 crore (USD 8 million) respectively

Investment Trends: 1988-97
§ During 1988-97, textiles sector attracted the
highest investment of INR 132 crore (USD 31
million) contributing 44% to total investments
during the decade
§ Highest employment was generated by the
sugar industry creating 2,371 jobs
contributing 40% to total employment
generated during the decade. It also attracted
second highest investment of INR 82 crore
(USD 20 million)
§ Soaps, cosmetics, and toiletries, metallurgical
industries and food processing industries were
among the top five investment generating
sectors during 1988-97 besides textiles and
sugar industries

§ During 1998-2007, maximum investments were
attracted by miscellaneous industries of INR
60 crore (USD 14 million) with 25% share in
total investment and generated second highest
employment
§ Highest employment was generated by the
textiles sector creating 6,438 jobs contributing
47% to total employment during the decade
§ Vegetable oils observed high value
investments with 1 new project worth INR 35
crore (USD 8 million)
§ Drugs & pharmaceuticals emerged as a new
sector inviting fresh investments during 1998-
2007 worth INR 31 crore (USD 7 million)

Agro and Marine based Industries Tourism Power
§ A total of 10 MoUs amounting to INR 7,068 crore (USD
1.68 billion) of investments were signed in Navsari during
Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit (VGGIS) hosted
in the year 2003, 05 and 07
§ Agro and marine based industries, power, and tourism
attracted major investments in the three summits
§ Highest investment was proposed by Union Territory of
Diu and Daman for setting up power project in the district
with proposed investment of INR 4000 crore (USD 0.95
billion)
§ M/s. LG Foundation proposed next highest investment for
setting of an entertainment zone in Navsari
§ Maximum number of MoUs were signed in agro and
marine based industries with total 10 MoUs in various
areas such as, floriculture, horticulture, biofuel, jatropha
and aquaculture

Economy Drivers
§ The development of Vansi-Borsi port as direct berthing deep water port
proposed by Gujarat Maritime Board will fuel the industrial growth in the
district. It will improve business opportunities for industries such as
mineral based industries, food and agro processing industries, salt
industries and marine based industries
§ The climate of Navsari district is well suited for floriculture activities. The
Gujarat Government has covered floriculture activities under Jyotigram
Yojana as a result of which 24- hour power supply is available. There are
many floriculture projects coming up in the district which will boost the
economy of the district and increase the exports of flowers which has a
growing demand
§ Surat-Navsari is proposed to be developed as an industrial area along the
Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). This will augment development of
textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food processing industries which
are prominent sectors

§ Government of India plans to develop a Dedicated Freight
Corridor (DFC) linking Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
§ The proposed DFC passes through six states in India, of which
Gujarat accounts for 38% (564 km) of total DFC length (1483
km).
§ The influenced area of 150 km on either sides of DFC is being
developed as “Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor” (DMIC).
§ Almost 62% of total area of Gujarat (18 out of 26 districts) would
be benefited by DMIC development.
§ The State Government identified 82 links in the DMIC influenced
area to upgrade them into two/four lane carriageway offering
connectivity between ports, industrial estates, hinterlands,
markets and points of agricultural produce.

§ Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can
be obtained from four main sources, viz Gujarat Water
Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), irrigation
canals, check dams, and bore wells
§ Dudhiya talao situated in the district is developed into
raw water storage place for the water to be obtained
from the Kakrapar canal.

§ Gujarat is the source of more that 39% onshore natural gas production
§ A State-wide integrated gas grid system is being set up in Gujarat with the primary objective of building a
continuous state-wide gas supply system for industrial, commercial, vehicular, and household use
§ The existing gas line section present in the district is covering Mora – Vapi, and is having total length of
47.312 kms

Port sector
§ Gujarat Maritime Board has identified Vansi-Borsi as a green field site for development of a direct
berthing deep water port.
§ The location is identified for handling petroleum and liquid chemical cargo for the immediate hinterland
§ The proposed site is 13 km away from nearest broad gauge railway link at Navsari and is 30 km south
of the industrial town of Surat
§ The Government has also proposed development of a modern fishing harbour at Dholai port at an
estimated cost of INR 14.77 crore (USD 3.5 million)
Health sector
§ Navsari Cancer Care Foundation has undertaken a mega project of establishing state-of-art
Radiotherapy Unit at Civil Hospital Navsari, jointly with the Government of Gujarat under Public Private
Partnership (PPP) model
§ This kind of facility will be first of its kind in South Gujarat and between Baroda and Mumbai

§ Navsari Agriculture University in the district provides
education in the fields of agriculture, forestry, horticulture,
and fisheries
§ Sugarcane Research Station at Navsari Agriculture
University is mainly engaged in the research of crop
improvement, crop production, and crop protection
§ Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technical Education and
Research in the district offers courses in computer science,
electrical, electronics, communication and mechanical

and Cottage Hospital is located at Vansda in the district

§ Dandi – It is a historical place located 16 km from the district. The place
has the Saifee Villa Museum established in 1961 to commemorate the
Salt March. The museum houses pictures and artifacts from Gandhiji’s
life
§ Somnath Mahadev temple – It is situated in Billimora taluka of the
district. It is a temple of Lord Mahadev and is the tallest (108 feet)
Mahadev temple in south Gujarat
§ Dastur Meherji-Rana Library – The library has a picture collection of
the old town of Navsari and one of the oldest religious manuscripts of
the Parsi community
§ Ubhrat – Located about 20 km from Navsari, Ubhrat is a picnic spot
with a white sandy beach and an amusement park

§ Vansda National Park – The park lies close to the National
Highway no. 8 and is bisected by Waghai-Vansda state
highway. The park is dense and has variety of flora and fauna.
There are over 250 species of plants including many varieties
of Orchids. The forest is a habitat for various animals, wide
variety of species of birds, butterflies, spiders, and snakes

  • 7. 7 Economy and Industry Profile § Textiles, diamond business, sugar industry, agro & food processing, paper, engineering and chemicals are some of the key business sectors in Navsari § The district has well developed floriculture and horticulture activities owing to its suitable climate and presence of a major player Best Roses Biotech Pvt. Ltd. § Best Roses has pioneered 6 hectare greenhouse project in the district which is the largest export- oriented floriculture project in the State.   • 13. 13 Investment Trends: 1988-97 § During 1988-97, textiles sector attracted the highest investment of INR 132 crore (USD 31 million) contributing 44% to total investments during the decade § Highest employment was generated by the sugar industry creating 2,371 jobs contributing 40% to total employment generated during the decade.   • 16. 16 Economy Drivers § The development of Vansi-Borsi port as direct berthing deep water port proposed by Gujarat Maritime Board will fuel the industrial growth in the district. It will improve business opportunities for industries such as mineral based industries, food and agro processing industries, salt industries and marine based industries § The climate of Navsari district is well suited for floriculture activities. The Gujarat Government has covered floriculture activities under Jyotigram Yojana as a result of which 24- hour power supply is available. There are many floriculture projects coming up in the district which will boost the economy of the district and increase the exports of flowers which has a growing demand § Surat-Navsari is proposed to be developed as an industrial area along the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). This will augment development of textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food processing industries which are prominent sectors
