LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS)
A learning management system is a software application or
web-based technology used to plan, implement and assess a specific learning management
system provides an instructor with a way to create and deliver content, monitor student
participation, and assess student performance. A learning management system may also
provide students with the ability to use interactive features such as threaded discussions, video
conferencing and discussion forums.

Components of an LMS
There are close to 600 varieties of LMS available for purchase today. Each is unique, and
possesses a feature set to meet the needs of a variety of trainers and educators. Some common
components or features that can be found in e-learning platforms include:
1. Rosters
A digital roll call sheet for tracking attendance and for sending invitations to class
participants.
2. Registration control
The ability to monitor and customize the registration process of e-learning curriculum.
3. Document management
Upload and management of documents containing curricular content.
4. Multiple device access
Delivery of course content over web-based inter faces such as desktops, phones or tablets.
5. Distributed instructor and student base
Remote participation by the instructor or pupil allows courseware to feature multiple
teachers or experts from across the globe.
6. Course calendars
Creation and publication of course schedules deadlines and tests.
7. Student engagement
Interaction between and among students, such as instant messaging e-mail, and
discussion forums.
8. Assessment and testing
Creating of varied knowledge retention exercises such as short quizzes and
comprehensive exams.

Advanced tracking and charting of student performance over time.

Advantages of LMS
Using the correct learning strategies, LMS can increase motivation of learners, promote
learners, encourage interaction, provide feedback and support can be provided during
the learning process.
An LMS supports content in various formats. Example; multimedia, video and text.
Access to course material is at any time.
Improvement in teaching methodology and the outcomes of the learning are not
guaranteed through learning management system.
Various activities are offered to the learners to make choices out of it.
Re-use of the learning activities can be done.

CONCLUSION
Learning management system were designed to
identify training and learning gaps, utilising analytical data and reporting. LMSs are
focused on online learning delivery but support a range of uses, acting as a platform for
online content, including courses both asynchronous based synchronous based. An
LMS may offer classroom management for instructor-led training or a flipped
classroom used in higher education, but not in the corporate space.
