4. Indoor Events
oConferences and business events receive a large number of attendees
oThey are usually held in large buildings
oRisks: saturated access, overcrowd in a single spot,…
oMotivation: to create a platform that aids the manager of an event to
o monitor the distribution of the attendees in the building
o prevent potential overcrowding situations
9. Overcrowding algorithm (1)
PRO: Easy to implement, fast and sufficiently accurate.
CON: Three routers must see a device to be positioned.
Trilateration is applied on the
wireless
frames to estimate the position of
Wi-Fi devices within the event.
Received Signal Strength Indicator
(RSSI) is used as measure distance
between the Wi-Fi router and device.
10. Overcrowding algorithm (2)
Once the position of each device is estimated, we compute the
average device density treating the event space as a mesh.
The event manager fixes a threshold that is used to create an
alert in case of overcrowding in any of the cells.
Implementation using Rtree and Shapely
11. Results visualization
Visualization using the Cloudera Hue interactive dashboard platform.
Data analytics dashboards with Hue graphs
Monitoring of the entry/exits of attendees

12. Evaluation
•4 Years From Now (4YFN) 2015 Conference:
• Part of the Mobile World Congress (MWC)
• Main attendees: businessmen and start-up enterprises
• Fira Montjuic, Barcelona, Spain
• 2,3,4 March 2015
•Data collected:
• Wi-Fi frames
• Entry/exit access logs
•Wi-Fi frame capturing routers disposed
as in the figure
13. Occupancy evaluation
Number of detected wireless devices compared to the number of attendees
logged by the entry/exit badge system.

15. Conclusions
oA platform of overcrowding detection
oBased on the monitoring of wireless devices
oRequires deploying Wi-Fi routers in an indoor event
oUsing scalable technologies (mainly Apache software)
oEvaluation shows accurate results
16. Future work
oTest other indoor positioning algorithms
oE.g. bilateration
oUse other distance measures
oIn order to counter the effects of RSSI
oTry other visualization solutions
oE.g. Kibana
