• Youth are a quarter of Egypt’s population and half of
them are poor.
• Unemployment among youth is 29%.
• 3 out of 4 unemployed persons are youth between 18-
29 years old.
• Unemployment rate among young people is more than
double national average.
• 88% of unemployed persons have an intermediate or
university degree.

3. Challenges
• Since 2011 security and instability of the country
hindered the implementation of some activities
especially in the rural/remote governorates.
• Unemployment levels, which have been historically high
in Egypt, have increased noticeably since then.
• The prevalence of illiteracy, which stands at 17% of the
total sample of youth, is mostly accounted for by rural
Upper Egypt youth.

Voluntourism is the practice of
individuals going on a nonpaid
working holiday for the
purpose of volunteering
themselves to worthy causes.
The aim of this initiative is to
insert Egypt in this high

19. • ‘Get Online Week’ is a European digital empowerment campaign that was
launched for the first time in Egypt and MENA.
• Theme: Employment, digital jobs, social innovation and entrepreneurship
for youth.
• Participants: Egypt, Morocco, Tunis, Jordan, Sudan, Syria and Oman.
Activities
1. App-athon : Computer Science students from nationwide universities participated in a
two day mobile application development marathon on one of three themes : Women
Empowerment, Child Protection and Environment.
2. Webinars : A series of 8 webinars on innovation and entrepreneurship were live
streamed.
3. Online Debate : ‘ Do you think there is the right environment for the growth of
entrepreneurship among youth in the Arab region’.
4. Training sessions, awareness sessions : On digital literacy and ICT in Cairo, upper
Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia and Syria.
5. Round table discussion : On youth innovation and entrepreneurship was held at the
UNDP Egypt Country Office. Young entrepreneurs, innovators, youth from civil society
and institutions were invited.
6. Final Event : “Innovation and Creativity for Development” . Activities included High
Level Round Table discussion, Innovation fair, workshops and creative performances.

22. • Civil Society organizations in different governorates played a vital
role in the implementation of our projects as they helped in
reaching a larger target of youth.
• ICT helped overcome challenges caused by the political situation
as it provided methods of indirect training for beneficiaries who
couldn't physically attend trainings and workshops.
• Public-private-people partnerships are useful as they allow for the
adaptation of training materials according to the market needs.
They also allow better opportunities for young people in terms of
employability and sustainable human development.
