Background
Non-‐adherence
to
medication
is
a
serious
problem
in
healthcare.
In
2009,
it
resulted
in
the
premature
death
of
125,000
people
in
the
U.S.
and
200,000
people
in
Europe.
During
the
same
year
(2009),
the
economic
cost
of
non-‐adherence
was
estimated
at
US$
290
billion
($1,000
per
person
per
year)
in
the
U.S.
and
€125
billion
in
Europe.
While
the
cost
of
healthcare
continues
to
rise
inexorably,
the
response
from
the
healthcare
industry
has
been
tardy
and
insincere
to
say
the
least.
Almost
all
medication
compliance
devices
currently
available
cater
to
home-‐based
patients.
Additionally,
many
require
the
assistance
of
an
expert
caregiver
to
calibrate
medication
dose
and
reminders
for
the
patient.
These
devices
also
do
not
attempt
at
closing
the
loop
between
the
doctor,
the
pharmacy
and
the
patient.
To
improve
the
outcome
of
healthcare
services,
medication
compliance
devices
should
be
portable,
intelligent
and
easy
to
use.
Vision
Our
vision
is
to
improve
the
health
outcomes
of
mobile
and
home-‐based
patients.
We
propose
to
achieve
this
vision
by
building
a
world-‐class
consumer
medical
devices
company
that
develops
portable,
user-‐friendly
and
state
of
the
art
healthcare
products.
Business
Strategy
Medistein
is
a
new
startup
for
portable
medical
devices.
Our
first
product
-‐
Portable
Medication
Unit
(PMU)
–
is
an
innovative
design
to
improve
the
medication
compliance
of
home-‐based
and
mobile
patients.
Current
medication
systems
such
as
Philips
MD2,
GlowCaps,
MedSignals
and
MedSmart
are
too
big
to
be
carried
around,
too
complicated
to
setup
and/or
unreliable.
Most
of
these
systems
measure
drug
consumption
by
counting
the
number
of
times
a
medication
container
was
opened
and
closed.
These
mechanisms
trigger
false
alarms
and
are
not
able
to
prevent
an
accidental
drug
under
dose
or
overdose.
The
PMU
eliminates
any
chance
of
medication
mix-‐up
/
incorrect
medication
by
working
with
a
standard
33mm
drug
enclosure.
A
Smart
Card
/
Health
Cloud
interface
and
a
Barcode
/
RFID
scanner
calibrates
the
PMU
with
the
patient’s
prescription.
The
PMU
detects
medicine
removal
in
realtime
and
automatically
reorders
medication
before
they
run
out.
The
PMU
measures
drug
removal
through
a
micro-‐force
sensor
featuring
sub-‐milliNewton
resolution.
The
micro-‐
force
sensor
can
be
embedded
in
pill
bottles,
vial
boxes
and
pill
organizers.
The
sensing
technology
can
measure
pills,
powder
or
liquid
and
detect
drug
overdose
and
under
dose,
in
addition
to
a
regular
dose.
The
seed
funding
will
be
used
to
build
a
full
prototype
of
the
PMU.
In
the
prototype,
we
will
develop
the
following
features
and
components:
1. An
apparatus
containing:
(a)
a
stand
and
a
clamp
to
hold
a
standard
33-‐mm
medication
container
and
(b)
a
pocket
on
the
reverse
side
of
the
clamp
to
insert
a
small-‐hand
held
computer
(smart
phone).
2. A
micro-‐force
sensor
coupled
to
the
apparatus
to
detect
weight
change
and
output
the
information
as
analog
voltage.
3. An
electronic
board
containing
an
ADC
(analog
to
digital
converter)
and
a
WiFi
module
to
convert
the
analog
voltage
to
digital
format
and
transmit
the
data
to
a
hand-‐held
computer
(smart
phone).
4. A
smart
phone
app
to
read
the
digital
information
and
configure
the
phone
for
monitoring
the
medication
compliance.
5. A
network/cloud
database
for
recording
prescription
data
and
the
medication
behavior
(missed
dose,
overdose,
under
dose).
We
anticipate
6
months
of
development
time
to
build
the
prototype
from
concept
to
reality.
The
prototype
will
demonstrate
the
full
capabilities
of
the
PMU
in
a
size
mirroring
the
desired
form
factor.
To
build
the
prototype,
hardware
and
software
development
will
be
undertaken
in
parallel
as
there
are
few
interdependencies
involved.
We
believe
that
the
prototype
will
help
us
reach
out
to
potential
investors
and
also
provide
an
accurate
valuation
of
our
idea.
We
anticipate
strong
revenues
from
the
commercial
launch
of
the
PMU
because
the
market
for
portable
medication
compliance
devices
is
huge
(100
million
people
in
30
OECD
countries).
We
believe
that
we
will
be
able
to
generate
annual
revenues
of
US$
250
Million
at
full
operations.
Capital
Needs
Raising
US$
100,000
seed
funding
to
build
a
full
prototype
of
the
PMU.
Please
discuss
with
Mr.
Alok
Narula
for
details.
