determined by the pursuit of profit and power which, individually
or as a whole, are of considerable importance and involve more
than two people, each with his/her own assigned tasks, who
collaborate for a prolonged or indefinite period of time
by using commercial or business-like structures
by using force or other means of intimidation or
by exerting influence on politics, the media, public

The overall best estimates of criminal proceeds are close to US$2.1 trillion in
2009 or 3.6% of global GDP.
DRUG TRAFFICKING continues to be the most lucrative form of business for
criminals, with an estimated annual value of $320 billion.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING is a global crime in which men, women and children
are used as products for sexual or labour-based exploitation. Number of victims of
trafficking to be around 2.4 million, with annual profits of about $32 billion.
SALE OF FRAUDULENT MEDICINES is a worrying business, as it represents a
potentially deadly trade for consumers. Criminals traffic fraudulent medicines
from Asia to South-East Asia and Africa to the value of $1.6 billion. Instead of

illegal source, or illegal application of income, and disguises that income to
make it appear legitimate.”
THREE-PHASE-MODELL
1st phase: Placement
Imports coming from the pre-offenses, usually large cash holdings, have to be placed in the
financial system to be converted into ordinary book money.
2nd phase: Layering
This phase begins after the successful placement of the money at the financial system. Its aim
is to make the tracing of the paper trail harder and optimally make it impossible to retrace
the origin of the dirty money.
3rd phase: Integration
The ultimate aim of money laundering is to assess the dirty money as legal income.
