2. What is SimPachamama?
• SimPachamama is an Agent Based simulation tool, which
mimics the behavior of a small community located at the
agricultural frontier. The user takes on the role of the
mayor of the community, and the objective is to
implement policies so as to improve human well-being as
much as possible without destroying the environment.
3. Different types of mayors:
• Passive, laissez-faire mayor: Doesn’t do anything –
useful for creating the baseline simulation.
• Greedy mayor: Wants to accumulate as much money as
possible to use for his own personal benefit.
• Softie green mayor: Pays people to conserve their
forests.
• Bad-ass green mayor: Taxes people who deforest.
• Smart, benevolent, green mayor: Combines policies to
maximize human well-being and minimize deforestation.

6. Policy initiative:
• Tax deforestation in order to reduce deforestation and
generate revenues to invest in environmentally
sustainable economic activities
– Eco-tourism
– Forest product industries (wood, nuts, chocolate, handicrafts, …)
– Urban activites
• Important: Make sure that deforestation taxes are
collected locally and can be used locally. Otherwise,
local communities will not perceive any benefits from the
deforestation tax and will thus oppose it violently.
