Dungannon christmas parade and holiday fest will be held on november 20th
1. Dungannon Christmas Parade and Holiday Fest will be held on November 20th, 2010. The
parade theme is a Home Town Christmas, turning Christmas Spirit into Community Spirit.
The event will take place at various places located throughout the town. The Historic
Dungannon Depot will be where most of the activities take place.
The Holiday Fest will start at 11:00 a.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. on November 20th, 2010. You
can check out the past Holiday Fests on our website: ddcinc.org.
The Dungannon Development Commission, Inc. with the board members and other
community volunteers will be working the fest. The person to contact will be the Executive
Director of the Dungannon Development Commission, who is Travis Perry at Travis@ddcinc.org
or 276-467-2306.
This will be the fifth year for the festival. The festival was a way of bringing the community
together to celebrate the old time tradition of the way it was years ago when the Santa Train
came through Dungannon. A group of people from the community came together to bring that
home town feeling back to Dungannon.
We have advertised on our website; Channel 30; Heritage TV; newspaper articles about the
Grand Marshall, vendors, and flyers along with brochures. There have been many methods of
letting the people know about the Holiday Fest but I guess what really advertises it, the Santa
2. Train. We will advertise this way again with some sponsors such as Churches in the community
and local businesses donating money for reusable banners.
The number of people has increased as years have gone by. The first year the main
attraction was the Santa Train with about 500 people in attendance. This was determined by
the amounts of hot chocolate and cookies which were handed out before the Santa Train. The
years after this the attendance kept increasing as we progressed toward more advertising and
the outreach did by the community to bring the community together. Our last festival held in
November of last year brought into town what was estimated at 2000 roughly. We estimate
this number by the food given out and the items sold by the vendors.
The event will open with the arrival of the Santa Train at 12:13 where the old Historic Depot
was before it was moved. First Baptist Church of Dungannon will be handing out cookies and
hot chocolate. Mrs. Ruth Collins is always there with donated items from McDonald’s to be
given to children who may not have received a toy or something thrown from the train. BB&T
hands out Santa Train bags also to children. Then those who wish to mosey on down to the
Historic Depot will be able to view vendors set up selling Arts/Crafts; Candles/Soap/Jewelry;
Homemade Apple Butter and many other activities such letting children make Christmas Cards
to Face Painting. The Dungannon Methodist Church will host Santa’s Workshop inside the
church from 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Children will be able to purchase Christmas gifts for family
members for a small price or make a gift for Mom or Dad. The Christmas Parade will start at
3. 4:00 p.m. with line up at Scotty’s Market. We expect the parade to be bigger and better this
year with more floats to old cars and horses. The Community Christmas Tree Lighting will take
place at 7:00 p.m. in front of the Historic Dungannon Depot. Mr. and Mrs. Santa will beat the
depot to have your child’ picture taken with them. They will hand out treat bags to all the
people.
The Holiday brings families who lived here years ago back to see the Santa Train which is a
very important part of tourism in Scott County. It brings the town together with that Home
Town Spirit of the approaching Christmas Season. We have had people call us from others
states asking when the event will happen in the year ahead. It promotes the Historic Depot with
a group called the Dungannon Historical Society giving tours and those who are older telling the
stories of what happened in this old historic building. We expect many more this year with this
historic designation.
The overall cost of the project runs somewhere between 2000 dollars to 2500 which will
increase this year due to added attractions promoting the Town of Dungannon as a Home Town
to visit all year long.
The funding primarily will be used for marketing of the event throughout the county.
What makes this event successful is the fact that it brings the community together to fellowship
with neighbors and friends from out of town and the fact that we love our town and want to
4. make it a place for people to come home to. The fact that as the years pass we loose that home
town feeling and want it to return through this event.
