Leadership lessons from Nelson Mandela
1. July is Mandela Month, and with Madiba's
birthday on 18 July 2013 it is an appropriate
time for us to celebrate Madiba's birthday, and
reflect on his values.
Even in his critical state of health, Madiba
continues to inspire us and unite us all
over the world, as he continues his Long
Walk to Freedom.
He continues to be the symbol of hope
we have for the well being of our country
and the world.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH SELF-AWARENESS AND SELF-EMPOWERMENT
The word AMATHUBA is isiXhosa for OPPORTUNITIES
2. A good head and good
heart are always a
formidable combination.
But when you add to that
a literate tongue or pen,
then you have something
very special.”
SELF AWARENESS
I learned that
courage was not
the absence of
fear, but the
triumph over it.
The brave man
is not he who
does not feel
afraid, but he
who conquers
that fear.
DO NOT JUDGE ME BY MY SUCCESSES, JUDGE ME
BY HOW MANY TIMES I FELL DOWN AND GOT
BACK UP AGAIN.
3. I HAVE NEVER
CARED VERY
MUCH FOR
PERSONAL PRIZES.
A PERSON DOESN’T
BECOME A
FREEDOM FIGHTER
IN THE HOPE OF
WINNING
AWARDS.
AS I WALKED OUT THE DOOR TOWARD THE GATE
THAT WOULD LEAD TO MY FREEDOM, I KNEW IF I
DIDN’T LEAVE MY BITTERNESS AND HATRED BEHIND,
I’D STILL BE IN PRISON.
SELF MANAGEMENT
4. IT IS T IS SAID THAT NO ONE TRULY
KNOWS A NATION UNTIL ONE HAS
BEEN INSIDE ITS JAILS.
A NATION SHOULD NOT BE JUDGED
BY HOW IT TREATS ITS HIGHEST
CITIZENS, BUT ITS LOWEST ONES.
NO SINGLE PERSON CAN LIBERATE A COUNTRY. YOU CAN
ONLY LIBERATE A COUNTRY IF YOU ACT AS A COLLECTIVE.
SOCIAL AWARENESS
I STAND HERE BEFORE YOU NOT AS A PROPHET,
BUT AS A HUMBLE SERVANT OF YOU, THE PEOPLE.
ONE OF THE THINGS I LEARNED WHEN I WAS
NEGOTIATING WAS THAT UNTIL I CHANGED MYSELF,
I COULD NOT CHANGE OTHERS.
5. IT IS T IS SAID THAT NO ONE TRULY
KNOWS A NATION UNTIL ONE HAS
BEEN INSIDE ITS JAILS.
A NATION SHOULD NOT BE JUDGED
BY HOW IT TREATS ITS HIGHEST
CITIZENS, BUT ITS LOWEST ONES.
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
6. IT IS T IS SAID THAT NO ONE TRULY
KNOWS A NATION UNTIL ONE HAS
BEEN INSIDE ITS JAILS.
A NATION SHOULD NOT BE JUDGED
BY HOW IT TREATS ITS HIGHEST
CITIZENS, BUT ITS LOWEST ONES.
SPORT HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD…IT HAS THE POWER TO INSPIRE.
IT HAS THE POWER TO UNITE PEOPLE IN A WAY THAT LITTLE ELSE DOES.
IT IS MORE POWERFUL THAN OVERNMENT IN BREAKING DOWN RACIAL BARRIERS.
7. IT IS T IS SAID THAT NO ONE TRULY
KNOWS A NATION UNTIL ONE HAS
BEEN INSIDE ITS JAILS.
A NATION SHOULD NOT BE JUDGED
BY HOW IT TREATS ITS HIGHEST
CITIZENS, BUT ITS LOWEST ONES.
IF YOU TALK TO A MAN IN A LANGUAGE HE UNDERSTANDS,
THAT GOES TO HIS HEAD.
IF YOU TALK TO HIM IN HIS LANGUAGE, THAT GOES TO HIS
HEART.
8. 1. SELF-AWARENESS
The Key To Change. Know Yourself, Grow Yourself
SELF AWARENESS is the necessary first step toward exploring and coming to understand
yourself, and toward change.
If you aren’t aware of what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and the way it’s affecting others,
you can’t change.
2. SELF-MANAGEMENT
is the key to our ability to manage change, or any other curve ball life throws us.
Stephen Covey emphasises that you and I have response-ability,
the ability to choose our response to any situation.
Managing our emotions allows us to make these choices so we can choose how
we respond to any situation.
3. SOCIAL AWARENESS
is about carefully considering what people want, and planning to communicate with
them in a way that is intended to meet that need.
About acknowledging the emotions of others, being thoughtful and considerate of their feelings, and
making decisions that take those feelings into consideration.
4. RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
allows you to connect with others in ways that help them feel understood and supported. Managing
relationships is an essential emotional intelligence skill that enables you to effectively lead change or
manage personal change.
9. “Do not judge me by my successes,
judge me by how many times I fell
down and got back up again.”
It is better to lead from behind and
to put others in front, especially
when you celebrate victory when
nice things occur.
You take the front line when there
is danger.
Then people will appreciate your
leadership.
I learned that courage was not the
absence of fear, but the triumph
over it.
The brave man is not he who does
not feel afraid, but he who conquers
that fear.
A good head and good heart are
always a formidable combination.
But when you add to that a literate
tongue or pen, then you have
something very special.”
A good leader can engage in a debate
frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at
the end he and the other side must be
closer, and thus emerge stronger.
You don't have that idea when you are
arrogant, superficial, and uninformed.
