Writing Argument
Excellent Paragraph:
One of the reasons that Lyddie should not sign the
petition is because it will make it impossible to reunite
her family. In chapter 12, Betsy, one of Lyddie’s
roommates, is considering signing the petition. Amelia,
another roommate, warns her not to by saying, “Should
you sign the petition, Betsy, they’ll dismiss you.” (91)
Like Betsy, if Lyddie signs the petition she’ll be fired. She
needs money to get back the family farm and live there
with her family. She won’t have any money without a
job. Worse than that, Lyddie could be “blacklisted,”
which means no other mills will hire her. (81) Lyddie
needs a job and money in order to reunite her family.
