It has been said that the best way to motivate a group is to lead them.
If you are struggling to motivate the people working for you, or those
who are part of your team, there are some great ways to rectify that.
When you break your team down into smaller groups it can be easier to
work. As a large group can be hard to control and you may lose some of
the people in the “shuffle” The best way to do team building exercises
for small groups is to build a sense of team spirit.
The best way to build team spirit is to create a team that feels united.
You can do this by choosing team colors or team crests. You can also
let each team create a cheer or a name, all of these things will make
the team feel united against the others.
Another “must do” when it comes to working with small groups is to
chose people who do not know each other very well to work together.
This will allow the team to meet and bond with people they may have
not otherwise known. When people are already close, it defeats the
purpose of a team building exercise.
Some ideas you can use, when putting together activities for small
groups are:
Create an issue: The team leader can create a mock issue. This can be
work related or not. Put people in groups of 3 or 4 and let each group
try to solve the problem. Each group must choose a leader and that
leader must delegate the group. This can help a team work together
during crisis and bond over an issue.

Create a Person: Each group of 3 or 4 gets a long piece of paper. The
first person draws the head (not allowing others to see), then folds the
drawing over so the next artist cannot see
the head. The next person draws the neck, folds the paper, and passes
it on. In
each instance drawings are folded over so no one will know what the
end result
looks like. The last person puts a name on it. When the folded paper is
opened,
roars of laughter follow. Groups can share drawings.
Games: Outdoor games require partners and small groups; each small
group can try to complete courses and events before the other.
Friendly group competition will bond the group and make them feel
closer to one another. Again it is important to pair and group people
together who are not already close.
Dividing the team into small teams and partners is the best way to
create stronger bonds. If you know certain people have issues you may
want to pair them together. Perhaps they will find a way to work
through any issues. Part of being a team means being able to resolve
and deflect conflict. Each team member will have to learn how to
properly do this in order to be a good team player.
