Group Meetings
Google Hangouts
By using interactive video based tools the
experience of distance learning students can
be improved - "I no longer feel alone" being a
telling comment from one student. Another
said "Being able to see our tutor and peers
was great!"
First year students used Google Hangouts
or Skype, which they captured using
screencast-o-matic and embedded in to
their individual blogs to reflect upon their
contribution.
Group Skype
Curate themed resources
Images can be pinned on
individual or shared virtual pin
boards to curate useful websites,
books, infographics and more.
Students or Educators can curate
a collection of resources. The
text box allows users to add their
perspective.
Collaborating and sharing
Students discussed definitions of news in
class then collaborated to find their own
definitions. These were shared by creating
Animoto videos: 5 images + 5 text boxes
Basic information about an applied
project/dissertation module was shared via
animated video in advance of an introductory
lecture.

Second year students used Padlet to give
feedback on a video project for Sheffield
Food Festival.
Journalism students posted comments on
an employability event. The link to this

Group Meetings Google Hangouts By using interactive video based tools the experience of distance learning students can be improved - "I no longer feel alone" being a telling comment from one student. Another said "Being able to see our tutor and peers was great!" First year students used Google Hangouts or Skype, which they captured using screencast-o-matic and embedded in to their individual blogs to reflect upon their contribution. Group Skype
  • 8. Curate themed resources Images can be pinned on individual or shared virtual pin boards to curate useful websites, books, infographics and more. Students or Educators can curate a collection of resources. The text box allows users to add their perspective.
  • 9. Collaborating and sharing Students discussed definitions of news in class then collaborated to find their own definitions. These were shared by creating Animoto videos: 5 images + 5 text boxes Basic information about an applied project/dissertation module was shared via animated video in advance of an introductory lecture.   • 10. Create open feedback Second year students used Padlet to give feedback on a video project for Sheffield Food Festival. Journalism students posted comments on an employability event. The link to this AnswerGarden was shared via Twitter. Credit: @juliegillin

  • 14. Don't do social; be S.O.C.I.A.L. Sincere Open Collaborative Interested Authentic Likeable Afshar and Martin 2012: 31 "Being social consists of this set of attributes. These help people connect and build relationships."
  • 15. BETT 2017 This session explores how social media can be used to connect, communicate, curate, collaborate and create to enhance the learning experience both within and outside of the classroom.
