9. Ganga Action Plan Phase I
•The Ganga rises in the Garhwal Himalaya from the
Gangotri Glacier, some 4100 meters above the sea level
under the name of Bhagirathi. The river flows through the
Himalayas till another two streams, the Mandakani and
the Alakhnanda join it at Devprayag.
•It is below this confluence that the river is known as the
Ganga proper.
•The Ganga Basin which is the largest river basin of the
country houses about 40% population of India. The river
after traversing a distance of 2525 kms. from its source,
meets the Bay of Bengal at Ganga Sagar in West Bengal.

10. Ganga Action Plan Phase-I
At the time of launching, the main objective of GAP
was to improve the water quality of Ganga to
acceptable standards by preventing the pollution
load reaching the river. Later on the objective of
GAP was recast as restoring the river water quality to
the 'Bathing Class' standard

11. Ganga Action Plan Phase-II
The program of river cleaning was extended to other major
rivers of the country under two separate schemes of GAP
Phase - II and the National River Conservation Plan
(NRCP). Yamuna and Gomati Action Plans were approved
in April 1993 under Ganga Action Plan Phase - II. Programs of
other major rivers were subsequently approved in 1995 under
NRCP. After launching of NRCP in 1995, it was decided to
merge GAP II with NRCP. A notification of this effect was
issued on 05.12.1996.

"Mission Clean Ganga" project in 2009 with
the objective that by 2020, no municipal
sewage and industrial waste would be
released in the river without treatment
National Ganga River Basin Authority
(NGRBA) was established by the Central
Government of India, on 20 February 2009
under Section 3(3) of the Environment
Protection Act, 1986, which also declared
Ganges as the "National River" of India.

13. National Mission for Clean Ganga(NMCG)
National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is the
implementation wing of National Ganga River
Basin Authority (NGRBA) set up under Min. of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2011
but now works under the control of Ministry of
Water Resources, River Development and Ganga
Rejuvenation, as per revised allocation business
rules of 2014. The aim is to clean Ganga and its
tributaries in a comprehensive manner. Uma
Bharti is the present Minister for Ministry for
Water Resources, River Development and Ganga
Rejuvenation, Government of India.

14. ‘Namami Gange Programme’, is an Integrated Conservation
Mission, approved as ‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union
Government in June 2014 to accomplish the twin objectives of
effective abatement of pollution, conservation and
rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
The intention is to “ramp up progress” of the Ganga clean-up
mission. Mission has been announced as an Integrated Ganga
Conservation Mission in the Union Budget of 2014-15 with the
aim of Ganga Rejuvenation. Under the project 8 states are
covered. Dept of Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation proposes
to make 1,632 gram Panchayats by the Ganga open defecation-
free by 2022,

15. The Union Cabinet gave its approval for setting up of
CGF in September 2014 with the aim of utilising the
collection for various activities under the ‘Namami

Authority (NGRBA) is a financing, planning,
implementing, monitoring and coordinating
authority for the Ganges River, functioning under
the water resource ministry of India.
The mission of the organisation is to safeguard
the drainage basin which feeds water into the
Ganges by protecting it from pollution or overuse.

september 2016 has taken decision under River

Management) Authorities Order 2016 for a new
body named "National Council for River Ganga
(Rejuvenation, Protection and Management)"
NCRG to replace existing NGRBA.
The new body will act as an authority replacing the
existing National Ganga River Basin Authority for
overall responsibility for superintendence of
pollution prevention and rejuvenation of river Ganga
Basin.
