PROVENANCE:
This piece was conceived while observing the magnificent birch around
our cottage in the Almaguin Highlands of Ontario.
The birch bend and sway together in the wind, always remaining stable
and upright. I am always drawn to their sentient qualities.
About Darlene Kulig A O C A
Darlene Kulig was awarded the CSEA/Berol Prismacolour National Art
Scholarship awarded to six Canadian students entering Fine Arts based
on outstanding potential in visual arts. Graduating from the Ontario
College of Art and Design she quickly moved into a commercial setting
and within four years of graduating was running her own successful
design studio. Her solid understanding of design and composition can be
seen in the underlying elements that both anchor and free her painting.
Always balancing art with business throughout her 25-year career as a
graphic designer, Darlene won awards for her design both in Canada and
the United States and also participated as a juror in design and art
competitions.
Currently, Darlene is focusing her creative efforts full time on her painting
as well as traveling the world with an eye for her next painting series. A
member of the Etobicoke Art Group and Neilson Park Creative Centre
where she studies and paints, you can find her work in Toronto area
galleries, in Barbados and the United States.
Darlene lives in Toronto with her husband, 3 children, and a very lively
Old English Sheepdog.

I am a recent graduate of the Shiatsu School of
Canada, the most comprehensive shiatsu training
program outside of Japan.
I found shiatsu by chance. In 2011, my mother was diagnosed with
Stage III pancreatic cancer. While nursing her through palliative care,
I found myself searching out new ways to comfort her and ease her
pain. When faced with a loved one who was, at times, too medicated
or in too much pain to communicate, I came to realize that touch
was the best way I could show I cared. While medication addressed
her pain symptoms, they caused a host of other problems. After her
passing I began to investigate alternative healing modalities, ones
that engaged with people holistically, seeing individuals as more
than just a set of symptoms. I discovered shiatsu massage while
visiting Thailand, and knew that this was the therapy I wanted to
learn and share.
