INTRODUCTION
Initially the word clinic is used for a place where a group
of physician would sit to treat and study patient requiring
medical and surgical treatment.
It is the place where the primary diagnosis of patient is
done and treatment is given.
According to latest concept, Clinics are also known as
“ambulatory care centre”.
DEFINITION
 The word clinics refers to a place where outdoor
patients come to physician and members of health
team for treatment and follow up treatment.
(or)
 According to another concept, clinics is the place
where the family members come to seek medical and
health care services as desired by them from the
members of health care team.
PURPOSES OF CLINICS
 To provide primary healthcare facilities to vulnerable
segments of society.
 Easy reach of services.
 To provide diagnostic facilities.
 To provide free an minimum cost of treatment
 To provide counseling and health awareness.
 To provide services of specialist doctors or clinicians.
 To provide home environment while treating.
FUNCTIONS OF CLINICS
 Medical checkups and follow up.
 Diagnostic services at small level.
 Medical health for the needy including medications.
 Counseling and health education.
 Referral services.
FEATURES OF GOOD CLINICS
 Clinic should be set up at such a place where transport
facilities are available.
 Clinics should be located near the emergency unit,
laboratory and radiological department as the basic
investigation may be required before starting
treatment.
 There should be sufficient area and chair in front of
the clinics and near the registration office.
 Physicians and members of the team should be
specialist, specialized and skilled in their work and
sufficient in numbers.
 All equipments should be up to date and in working
condition.
 Sufficient stationary should be available.
 Inside the clinic, hand washing facilities, screen for
privacy, arrangement for sufficient light should be
there.
 Female attendant should be available while examining
female patient.
 Facilities for drinking water and toilet.
 Small portable canteen
 Timing should be fixed .
 Staff working in clinic should be kind, sympathetic
and skilful in answering the queries.
 There should be arrangement for effective health
education.

1. GENERAL CLINICS:-
In this clinics all cases are seen by physician. These
clinics are more convenient because:-
i. all clients can be dealt with at the same time. eg:-
pregnant women, malnourished child,
ii. an individual person can use the same visit to have all
the problems seen in one single occasion.
2. MCH CLINICS:- There are a number of separate
clinics run on different days of weeks. This system of
clinics is used where access is very easy and clients
number is very large. It includes:-
Antenatal clinics
Postnatal clinics
Family welfare clinics
Under 5 clinics
Reproductive and child health clinics.
ANTENATAL CLINICS
 Clinics where pregnant mother can get care during her
pregnancy.
 Functions includes:-
 Protect the health of mother.
 Treat anemia and malnutrition among pregnant women.
 Screen high risk cases.
 To treat infection.
 To immunize mother against tetanus.
 To check growth of fetus.
 To maintain antenatal records.
POSTNATAL CLINICS
 In this clinics care is provided to the mother and child
after delivery.
 Functions includes:-
To help mother in recovery.
To prevent infection.
To prevent complication.
Teach mother about care of newborn baby.
FAMILY WELFARE CLINICS:-
 It provides reproductive health and family planning
services .
 Functions includes:-
 To provide guidance and counseling to the “eligible
couples”.
 To treat infertility.
 To advice spacing between birth.
 To provide contraceptives devices to the couples.
 To motivate couple for “small family norms”.
UNDER 5 CLINICS
 Also called WELL BABY CLINICS.
 It is the best combination of curative, preventive and
promotive care services provided to the child under 5
years as that age is the crucial time for the growth and
development of baby.

 The aim of RCH clinic is to reduce maternal and child
mortality and morbidity rate.

 Essential newborn services.
3. SPECIALITY CLINICS
These clinics provides medical and counseling services
for specific disorders. It includes:-

Diabetes clinics

  • 2. INTRODUCTION Initially the word clinic is used for a place where a group of physician would sit to treat and study patient requiring medical and surgical treatment. It is the place where the primary diagnosis of patient is done and treatment is given. According to latest concept, Clinics are also known as “ambulatory care centre”.
  • 3. DEFINITION  The word clinics refers to a place where outdoor patients come to physician and members of health team for treatment and follow up treatment. (or)  According to another concept, clinics is the place where the family members come to seek medical and health care services as desired by them from the members of health care team.
  • 4. PURPOSES OF CLINICS  To provide primary healthcare facilities to vulnerable segments of society.  Easy reach of services.  To provide diagnostic facilities.  To provide free an minimum cost of treatment  To provide counseling and health awareness.  To provide services of specialist doctors or clinicians.  To provide home environment while treating.
  • 5. FUNCTIONS OF CLINICS  Medical checkups and follow up.  Diagnostic services at small level.  Medical health for the needy including medications.  Counseling and health education.  Referral services.
  • 6. FEATURES OF GOOD CLINICS  Clinic should be set up at such a place where transport facilities are available.  Clinics should be located near the emergency unit, laboratory and radiological department as the basic investigation may be required before starting treatment.  There should be sufficient area and chair in front of the clinics and near the registration office.
  • 7.  Physicians and members of the team should be specialist, specialized and skilled in their work and sufficient in numbers.  All equipments should be up to date and in working condition.  Sufficient stationary should be available.  Inside the clinic, hand washing facilities, screen for privacy, arrangement for sufficient light should be there.  Female attendant should be available while examining female patient.
  • 8.  Facilities for drinking water and toilet.  Small portable canteen  Timing should be fixed .  Staff working in clinic should be kind, sympathetic and skilful in answering the queries.  There should be arrangement for effective health education.
  • 9. TYPES OF CLINICS CLINICS GENERAL CLINICS MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CLINICS SPECIALITY CLINICS
  • 10. 1. GENERAL CLINICS:- In this clinics all cases are seen by physician. These clinics are more convenient because:- i. all clients can be dealt with at the same time. eg:- pregnant women, malnourished child, ii. an individual person can use the same visit to have all the problems seen in one single occasion.
  • 11. 2. MCH CLINICS:- There are a number of separate clinics run on different days of weeks. This system of clinics is used where access is very easy and clients number is very large. It includes:- Antenatal clinics Postnatal clinics Family welfare clinics Under 5 clinics Reproductive and child health clinics.
  • 12. ANTENATAL CLINICS  Clinics where pregnant mother can get care during her pregnancy.  Functions includes:-  Protect the health of mother.  Treat anemia and malnutrition among pregnant women.  Screen high risk cases.  To treat infection.  To immunize mother against tetanus.  To check growth of fetus.  To maintain antenatal records.
  • 13. POSTNATAL CLINICS  In this clinics care is provided to the mother and child after delivery.  Functions includes:- To help mother in recovery. To prevent infection. To prevent complication. Teach mother about care of newborn baby.
  • 14. FAMILY WELFARE CLINICS:-  It provides reproductive health and family planning services .  Functions includes:-  To provide guidance and counseling to the “eligible couples”.  To treat infertility.  To advice spacing between birth.  To provide contraceptives devices to the couples.  To motivate couple for “small family norms”.
  • 15. UNDER 5 CLINICS  Also called WELL BABY CLINICS.  It is the best combination of curative, preventive and promotive care services provided to the child under 5 years as that age is the crucial time for the growth and development of baby.
  • 17. REPRODUCTIVE AND CHILD HEALTH CLINICS:-  The aim of RCH clinic is to reduce maternal and child mortality and morbidity rate.  Functions includes:-  Provide essential obstetrical services  Referral services  MTP  Immunization for both mother and child  Essential newborn services.
  • 18. 3. SPECIALITY CLINICS These clinics provides medical and counseling services for specific disorders. It includes:- TB clinics Diabetes clinics STD clinics Cardiac clinics
  • 19. PRE- REQUISITES FOR SETTING CLINICS SELECT LOCATION & DATE MEETING WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS DETERMINING STAFF NEEDS PERMISSION FROM STATUTORY BODY
  • 20. PLACE FOR CLINICS:- Clinics are mainly arranged at following places:-  Sub center  Primary health center  Community health center  Hospitals  Colonies, slums, bus stands , schools,
  • 21. FEATURES OF GOOD CLINICS:-  Planned and follow the time table.  Physician and member of health team should be specialist and skilled  Proper arrangement of places, equipment, medicines etc.  Behaviour of medical staff should be satisfactory  Need of community should be kept in mind.
