The U.S. Department of Commerce collects, processes and disseminates data on a range of issues that impact our nation. Whether it's data on the economy, the environment, or technology, data is critical in fulfilling the Department's mission of creating the conditions for economic growth and opportunity. It is this data that provides insight, drives innovation, and transforms our lives. The U.S. Department of Commerce has become known as "America's Data Agency" due to the tens of thousands of datasets including satellite imagery, material standards and demographic surveys. But having a host of data and ensuring that this data is open and accessible to all are two separate issues. The latter, expanding open data access, is now a key pillar of the Commerce Department's mission. It was this focus on enhancing open data that led to the creation of the Commerce Data Service (CDS). The mission at the Commerce Data Service is to enable more people to use big data from across the department in innovative ways and across multiple fields. In this talk, I will explore how we are using big data to create a data-driven government. This talk is a keynote given at the Texas tech University's Big Data Symposium.

Prediction the main indexes of participation in election and its effective factors are serious challenges for political and social planners. By respect to abnormal nature of offered analyzes by political scientists, data searchers tried to solve the problems of other methods by discovering hidden sciences of data. In this paper, we represent combined method of Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Correlation-based feature selection (CFS) for increasing precision of classifying in methods based on data searching for participation in election which identifies and removes noised Feature of total set of them. Results of our paper indicated that our offered method could increase precision of other methods prediction.

GA-CFS APPROACH TO INCREASE THE ACCURACY OF ESTIMATES IN ELECTIONS PARTICIPATION

Part 1: Individual Factors Affecting Voter Turnout Based on our class discussion of voter turnout, you are going to examine individual factors affecting turnout and how they have changed over the past 50 years. To do so, you will be using historical data provided by the United States Census Bureau. This data is located here: http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/socdemo/voting/publications/historical/index.html You will need to download the Excel spreadsheet files (XLS or CSV) for Table A-1 and Table A-2. Contained in Table A-1 are rates of self-reported voter turnout in elections from 1964 to 2014 by age. You will analyze the percent of the total population that voted for age groups 18-24, 25-44, 45-64, and 65 years and over. Contained in Table A-2 are rates of self-reported voter turnout in elections from 1964 to 2014 by educational attainment. You will analyze the percent of the total population that voted for educational attainment levels less than 9th grade, 9th to 12th grade, no diploma, high school graduate or GED, some college or associate’s degree, and bachelor’s degree or more. You should cut and paste each of these columns into a new spreadsheet for the elections from 1964 to 2014. Once this is done, sort the data by ascending year. Finally, you should only keep presidential elections (1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012). Using a spreadsheet program, create two different line graphs showing how voter turnout rates have changed over time by age and level of educational attainment respectively. The x-axis should be the years from 1964 through 2012 (presidential elections only) and the y-axis should be percent that voted. In the respective line graph, a separate line should be drawn for the each category age (18-24, 25-44, 45-64, and 65 years and over) and educational attainment (less than 9th grade, 9th to 12th grade, no diploma, high school graduate or GED, some college or associate’s degree, and bachelor’s degree or more). Cut and paste each of the line graphs into your homework document labeled 1a and 1b. For each line graph, describe in a few sentences the 48-year trend in voter turnout. 1c. In a few sentences, explain why we would expect to see differences in turnout among different categories of age and level of education. Part 2: Institutional Factors Affecting Voter Turnout In this section you will be studying the relationship between institutional factors and voter turnout. Specifically, you will test the effect of rules governing requests for absentee ballots on turnout. You will use data collected by Cemenska et al. (2009). The study describing the data and a subset of the data based on the 2008 election are posted on Classes in the folder “Resources/Research Assignment.” The data file you will work with is called Pew_Early_Vote.xls. This article advances our understanding of regression-based data mining by comparing the utility of Least Absolute Value (LAV) and Least Squares (LS) regression methods. Using demographic variables from U.S. state-wide data, we fit variable regression models to dependent variables of varying distributions using both LS and LAV. Forecasts generated from the resulting equations are used to compare the performance of the regression methods under different dependent variable distribution conditions. Initial findings indicate LAV procedures better forecast in data mining applications when the dependent variable is non-normal. Our results differ from those found in prior research using simulated data.

Between 2000 and 2016, the annual number of drug overdose deaths in the United States more than tripled, from 17,500 to 63,500, and most of these deaths involved opioids. Despite widespread increases in overdose death rates from natural and semi-synthetic opioids, synthetic opioids, and heroin, individual states’ death rates varied widely. For example, in 2016, Nebraska’s rate of 1.2 deaths per 100,000 people was the lowest in the U.S. for natural and semi-synthetic opioids, while West Virginia’s rate (the highest) was more than 15 times larger, at 18.5 deaths. These deaths are the most glaring indication of the growing crisis of opioid abuse and addiction that has been spreading unevenly throughout the country over the past two decades. On this SHADAC webinar, Research Fellow Colin Planalp will examine the United States opioid epidemic at the state level, analyzing trends in overdose deaths from heroin and other opioids, such as prescription painkillers. Using data available through SHADAC’s State Health Compare, he will look at which states have the highest rates of opioid-related deaths and which have experienced the largest increases in death rates. Mr. Planalp will be joined by SHADAC Research Fellow Robert Hest, who will discuss the data on opioid-related overdose deaths from the U.S. Centers from Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that are available on SHADAC’s State Health Compare. He will also discuss State Health Compare data from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on sales of common prescription opioid painkillers. Mr. Hest will show users how to access and use the data for state-level analyses.
