2. LETTER FROM THE CHAIR:
Dear Participants,
We are absolutely delighted to welcome each of you to SMiās Smart
Water Systems 2018 conference.
In recent years we have seen a rapid growth in interest in smart water
systems. This has been fuelled by heightened consumer expectation
that we should understand our water networks and take proactive
action, in addition to the emerging technological developments
in Internet of Things (IoT) communications and data processing.
Wholesalers, retailers and the supply chain are all participating in trials.
What remains difļ¬cult to understand and quantify is the potential costs
and beneļ¬ts of such systems, and as PR19 preparations increasingly
focus our minds on these complex questions, we are all coming under
increased pressure to provide answers.
The conference will therefore allow for informative presentations from
subject matter experts in all areas related to smart water systems, and
thereby provide a tremendous opportunity for meaningful discussion.
We look forward to seeing you there!

4. A Data Driven Approach to
Managing Water Networks
Overview of the workshop:
Managing water networks efļ¬ciently is facing a number of
challenges from aging infrastructure, growth in population,
climate and the environment, and growing expectations
from customers and regulators. To meet these challenges, we
must make better use of existing data and new data to help
manage the assets, the demand, the operating conditions
and how we respond to incidents. In other words using timely
data to underpin decisions and the deployment of resources.
Why you should attend:
This workshop will explore the options for using data
analytics and visualisaton to help operate water networks
more efļ¬ciently. It will discuss the maze of potential
communication systems that are becoming available to
getting data from the network. It will present some of the
algorithms that are currently being used and the processes
for accessing data and keeping it live. Attendees will get
the opportunity to then discuss the needs and challenges in
moving to smarter networks in a workshop style session. There
will be the opportunity to share challenges and take away
ideas for potential solutions.
