Dr. Vinod K Kanvaria gave a presentation on using software and AI tools for e-content creation. He demonstrated several software tools for creating content in Indic languages, text editing and paraphrasing, creating videos, and checking content for plagiarism. Some of the tools highlighted included MS Indic Language, Google Indic Language, QuillBot, ChatGPT, ScreenCast, Invideo.io, and SmallSEOTools. r/evolution in Media(Scapes) Communication, Media, and Film (CMF) Graduate Student Conference University of Calgary May 10-11, 2023 Abstract The future of coding is evolving with the release of GitHub Copilot (Microsoft, 2022) developed by Microsoft that generates code from text comments. This product, which could democratize programming for many, also signals an alarm to the open-source community and civic developers because of how public code was used to train it, unbeknownst to anyone (Joseph Saveri Law Firm, 2022). Microsoft’s acquisition of GitHub (Microsoft Acquires GitHub, 2018) now makes more sense as it provided them easy access to lots of training data from public code repositories and an existing customer base to offer this new subscription-based tool. As a coder and technologist, I love the idea of having code magically appear the moment that I begin typing comments into my python notebook. However, as a member of an underrepresented population in business and technology, I have some concerns on whose code was used to train GitHub Copilot and the impact it may have to squelch newcomers with diverse backgrounds into the technology field. Will AI-generated code open the door to more participation, or will its subscription cost be a barrier? In this short talk, I will present a recorded video of code generation in action and discuss my concerns about whose code is represented in the model and the impact this tool has on new and aspiring coders and the open-source community.
