Going Serverless
A simple traditional web application consists of a web server, web client and an optional database. A traditional software developer needs to be aware of the server in which his code runs, because it has to be created, scaled, and maintained. If it goes down at the most critical time, it could result in drastic consequences.
When a single application is deployed in a server, there will be lot of unused resources. For example, if a developer deploys a Storm cluster which uses CPU heavily for computation, there will be less use of the hard disk. These servers are not custom made for our applications so there will be resource wastages. The concept of a Serverless Architecture came up as a solution to overcome this problem and a lot of other issues coupled with physical servers. In this Innovation Session, Danula Eranjith, Malinga Perera and Shehan Perera from the Data and Analytics team discuss the Serverless Architecture concept, and how it can be implemented using AWS technologies.

Data can be like water flowing along the river. Its a stream never ends.
Especially the many IoT devices can produce such endless flow of data, pushing it using various asynchonous messaging protocols like e.g. MQTT, Websockets, JMS, STOMP, XMPP or whatever you imagine. The OSGi frameowrk provides a lot of stuff to get such streams handled!
This track will give you a clue, how to get these data stream into your application. We show you an overview how to stream data using different protocol implementations like e.g. Websocket or MQTT using one common interface in an OSGi manner. Pushstreams play an imporant role to consume all the data. You will see the new OSGi pushstreams in action and how the consumer can control the speed of flow.

Stencil is a compiler for web components that builds optimized custom elements using TypeScript and JSX. It is inspired by Angular, React, Vue, and other frameworks. Stencil focuses on fast startup times and small file sizes for progressive web apps. Sample apps show it has significantly faster startup and smaller bundles compared to other frameworks. Components are lazily loaded by default without needing Webpack.
MongoDB.local Austin 2018: PetroCloud: MongoDB for the Industrial IOT Ecosystem
MongoDB has been successfully used by PetroCloud for their industrial IoT platform since they reengineered their stack in 2013, moving from multiple languages and MySQL to a unified JavaScript and JSON stack with MongoDB at its core. MongoDB's flexibility, high availability, and ease of use have supported PetroCloud's growth to over 3,500 devices generating 250,000 daily events. Recently, PetroCloud migrated their MongoDB deployment to the MongoDB Atlas cloud database service to reduce management overhead as their data and usage grew.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
