Two Italian immigrants, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were convicted of murdering two men during a robbery in South Braintree, Massachusetts in 1920 and sentenced to death; their trial was controversial with accusations of anti-immigrant bias influencing the outcome, and they maintained their innocence until their execution seven years later in 1927 despite numerous appeals.

This PowerPoint guides the design and development of a wiki created by Team SCABA for faculty members at the University of Alabama who must become familiar with the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) process. The wiki provides information on academic language, including a video, PowerPoint, and rubrics. It was created as a preferred delivery system over face-to-face meetings and allows easy, anytime access and organization of information.

This document provides information about volunteer training at RiAus in December 2014. It summarizes the contributions of volunteers in 2014, including over 60 hours of event volunteering worth $2000 and over 200 hours of blogging worth $6000-10,000. It introduces the new Australia's Science Channel rebranding and RiAusTV online platform. Volunteers are asked to test the new platform and provide feedback. A new volunteer coordinator will begin in January 2015 to coordinate future volunteering opportunities. The document concludes by thanking volunteers for their support.
Fundamentalism was a religious movement in the 1920s concerned with America's moral decline due to modern consumer culture and urbanization. Fundamentalists believed the Bible was literally true and rejected Darwin's theory of evolution. In 1925, the Butler Act in Tennessee outlawed teaching evolution in schools. This led to the Scopes Trial, where high school teacher John Scopes was prosecuted for teaching evolution and defended by Clarence Darrow against prosecutor William Jennings Bryan. Though found guilty, the trial hurt fundamentalism's image and political influence.
Photonics, the science of light, generates, detects and controls photons, harnessing the power of light energy. We can thank photonics for our flat-panel computers, HDTVs, smart phone displays, fast tele-communications lines, and even laser surgery.
Imagine the looming benefits of personalised medicine, where photonics is used to analyse your genetics and determine your best treatment options. Yes, the future of photonics is bright, pardon the pun, and is highly relevant for any students considering a career in physics.
Targeted at Years 7-10 teachers, this presentation from A/Prof David Lancaster from The University of Adelaide’s Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing outlined the scientific principles behind photonics, how it is being used currently and the problems it could help to solve in the future. Potential career paths and in-class activities were also discussed.

The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement in the 1920s centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, where African American literature, art, and music flourished. This was sparked by the Great Migration, where many African Americans moved north for more opportunities. Jazz and blues music grew popular during this time through artists like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Writers like Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston also rose to prominence, exploring themes of urban African American life and identity through works like Hughes' poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers."

2014 is the UNESCO International Year of Crystallography, celebrating 100 years since X-ray diffraction allowed scientists to study the detailed structure of crystalline materials. Now crystallography is used in practically all science disciplines, from geologists analysing and dating meteorites to chemists synthesising brand new drugs to fight disease. Advanced technology, including synchrotrons and electron microscopes, now allow scientists to ‘see’ the structure of a variety of materials, including proteins, viruses, and drugs.
This session will feature Prof Andrea Gerson, who uses crystallography in her current research at UniSA. Andrea is internationally recognised, and can speak firsthand about the exciting work happening at the Australian Synchrotron. Teachers watching online will be able to ask Andrea questions using the RiAus chatroll.
This online session, targeted at Years 7-10 teachers, will outline the scientific principles behind crystallography, how it is being used currently and the problems it could help to solve in the future. Potential career paths and in-class activities will also be discussed.

This document discusses different policies that governments can implement to encourage grocery stores to provide healthier food options. It outlines three key ways that policies work: by requiring certain standards, incentivizing desired behaviors, and restricting unwanted behaviors. Specific examples are given of policies that require convenience stores to sell fresh produce, incentivize grocery stores by allowing additional floor space or parking exemptions for including fresh food markets, and restrict development that would negatively impact public parks or schools. The document also discusses using public resources and community benefits to further policy goals.
