3. Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data:
① Prepared by the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-
Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda (country-led)
② Adopted by the UN Statistical Commission at its 48th Session in 2017
③ Referenced in the Resolution on the work of the Statistical Commission adopted by
the General Assembly in July 2017
④ Provides a comprehensive framework for planning and implementing statistical
capacity-building pertaining to the 2030 Agenda. Not meant for establishing a
Global Trust Fund. Up to agencies to prepare implementation plans.
⑤ Statistical capacity development initiatives by Int. Agencies aligned with Global
Action Plan are demand-driven

5. Strategic Area 3: Strengthening of basic statistical activities and programmes, with
particular focus on addressing the monitoring needs of the 2030 Agenda
① Objective 3.1: Strengthen and expand household survey programmes, integrated survey systems,
business and other economic survey programmes, population and housing census programmes,
civil registration and vital statistics programmes and the ICP….
② Objective 3.2: Improve the quality of national statistical registers and expand the use of
administrative records integrating them with data from surveys and other new data sources…
③ Objective 3.3: Strengthen and expand System of National Accounts and the System of
Environmental Economic Accounts
④ Objective 3.4: Integrate geospatial data into statistical production programmes at all levels
⑤ Objective 3.5: Strengthen and expand data on all groups of population to ensure that no one is
left behind

6. Each SDG indicator associated to (at least) 1 Custodian Agency, responsible for:
① Develop the methodology and related guidelines & documentation
② Lead Statistical capacity development efforts
③ Collect national data, harmonize & disseminate them at Global level
④ Produce global progress reports & support countries for National SDG Reports
and Voluntary National Reviews
Coordination across Custodian Agencies:
① Data collection requests for a specific indicator only from custodian agencies
(Guidelines on global SDG data flows)
② Similarly, Statistical Capacity Development initiatives for a specific indicator
should also be led custodian agencies to avoid duplication of efforts

FAO-WB-IFAD-ISTAT: Development of an integrated agricultural and household survey
proramme to collect key environmental, social &economic data on the farms:
① 2.3.1/2.3.2 – Productivity and Income of small-holders
② 2.4.1 – Proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture
FAO-GEOGLAM-ESA: Use of geospatial images for producing land cover/use statistics
as critical source for a number of SDG indicators and improved agricultural statistics:
① 15.1.1 - Forest area as a proportion of total land area; 15.3.1 – Proportion of land
that is degraded over total land area; 15.3.1 – Mountain Green Cover Index

9. FAO-PARIS21: Mainstreaming SDG indicators in the NSDS:
① Upgrade sectoral and national statistical master plans to ensure that the SDG
indicators can be regularly produced in a sustainable way. Bottom-up approach.
FAO-WB: Promoting the use of SDG indicators in decision-making:
① Help countries to adopt the legal, methodological and software tools to publish
microdata of agricultural surveys & censuses
② Enable users and researchers to access government data and to use them for
producing policy-relevant analyses.
