1. INTRODUCTION
Education aims at making children capable of becoming responsible,
productive and useful members of society. Knowledge skills and attitudes are built
through learning experiences and opportunities created for learners in school. It is
in the classroom that learners can analyze and evaluate their experiences, learn to
doubt, to question to investigate and to think independently.
2. Place of Evaluation in the Curriculum
The subject of examination and evaluation occupies an important place
in the field of education. It is necessary for parents and teachers to know from
time to time how the pupils are progressing and what their attainments are at any
particular stage. It is equally necessary for the society to assure itself that the
work entrusted to its institutions is being carried on satisfactorily and that the
pupils studying there are receiving the right type of education for attaining the
required standards. This kind of check up of the work is essential in the interest of
all concerned - pupils, teachers, parents and the public. Examinations are the usual
means adopted for this purpose.
3. What is `Continuous' and `Comprehensive' Evaluation ?
Success in education is determined by the extent to which the learning
objectives are realized. The progress towards attainment of objectives has to be assessed
and evaluated for otherwise, we will not know where we are going. One of the main
purposes of evaluation at the school stage is to help the learner's improve their
achievement in scholastic areas and to develop Life Skills and attitudes with reference to
the larger context and canvas of life. Further, in NPE (1986) it has been emphasized that
at the school level the evaluation should be formative or developmental in nature
because at this stage child is in the formative stage of learning and thus the emphasis
should be on improvement of learning.
Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) refers to a system of school-
based evaluation of students that covers all aspects of students development.
It is a developmental process of assessment which emphasizes on two fold
objectives. These objectives are continuity in evaluation and assessment of broad based
learning and behavioral outcomes on the other.
4. Continuous Internal Assessment
The term `continuous' is meant to emphasize that evaluation of identified
aspects of students `growth and development' is a continuous process rather than an
event, built into the total teaching-learning process and spread over the entire span of
academic session. It means regularity of assessment, frequency of unit testing, diagnosis
of learning gaps, use of corrective measures, retesting and for their self evaluation.
Purpose of Internal Assessment
> Identify strengths and weakness
> Plan learning
> Provide feedback to learner
> Measure individual attainment
> Make future choice
> Award qualification
> Provide information to employers
> Monitor and maintain standards
> Evaluate performance levels
The success of the system depends on its acceptance by students. Tests,
assignments etc. must be framed to enable objectivity in assessment. The
student must be briefed clearly and in advance about the programme of
assessment, its contents, timing and criteria and the weightages attached to
each method of assessment. He should also be allowed to discuss the valuation
of his assignments, answer books or other work at every stage and be convinced
of its fairness.
5. Comprehensive Evaluation
The second term `comprehensive' means that the scheme attempts to
cover both the scholastic and the co scholastic aspects of students' growth and
development.
Since abilities, attitudes and aptitudes can manifest themselves in forms other
then the written word, the term refers to application of variety of tools and
techniques (both testing and non-testing) and aims at assessing a learner's
development in areas of learning like :
1. Knowledge
2. Understanding/Comprehension
3. Applying
4. Analyzing
5. Evaluating
6. Creating
6. Objectives of `Continuous' and `Comprehensive' Evaluation
a. To help develop cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills.
b. To lay emphasis on thought process and de-emphasise memorization
c. To make evaluation an integral part of teaching-learning process
d. To use evaluation for improvement of students' achievement and
teaching -learning strategies on the basis of regular diagnosis
followed by remedial instruction
e. To use evaluation as a quality control devise to maintain desired
standard of performance
f. To determine social utility, desirability or effectiveness of a programme
and take appropriate decisions about the learner, the process of learning
and the learning environment
g. To make the process of teaching and learning a learner-centered activity.
7. TOOLS FOR CONTINUOUS AND COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT
Different techniques can be used by the teacher to observe both scholastic and
non-scholastic performances of pupils. The following tools can be used for continuous
internal evaluation:
(a) Quizzes (Scheduled/Unscheduled)
(b) Written and Oral Tests ( Objective, Short Answer, Long Answer, Problem
Solving)
(c) Assignments
d) Laboratory/ Field/Practical/Project Work
(e) Term Paper/Dissertation/Thesis(f)Tutorials/Group Discussions/Seminars Unlike
the cognitive outcomes, affective qualities cannot be effectively assessed
through paper-pencil tests.
8. Conclusion
Education has a dual role-the dissemination of knowledge by
teachers and the assimilation of knowledge by students. This is best
served if the teacher simultaneously carries on the tasks of teaching
and assessment. Such assessment will clearly reveal to the teacher
whether his teaching is effective and whether learning is achieved.
Continuous evaluation based on this principle will not only remove
the fear-complex in the mind of the student but also motivate him
for effective learning. Consequently, the student will find his studies
interesting
The system of continuous evaluation is also a means by
which the work of the student on the entire syllabus may be judged
and not merely his work on part of the syllabus on which an
examiner may base his questions. Its Totally develop the quality of
Education by continuously evaluating the student.

  • 2. 1. INTRODUCTION Education aims at making children capable of becoming responsible, productive and useful members of society. Knowledge skills and attitudes are built through learning experiences and opportunities created for learners in school. It is in the classroom that learners can analyze and evaluate their experiences, learn to doubt, to question to investigate and to think independently. 2. Place of Evaluation in the Curriculum The subject of examination and evaluation occupies an important place in the field of education. It is necessary for parents and teachers to know from time to time how the pupils are progressing and what their attainments are at any particular stage. It is equally necessary for the society to assure itself that the work entrusted to its institutions is being carried on satisfactorily and that the pupils studying there are receiving the right type of education for attaining the required standards. This kind of check up of the work is essential in the interest of all concerned - pupils, teachers, parents and the public. Examinations are the usual means adopted for this purpose.
  • 3. 3. What is `Continuous' and `Comprehensive' Evaluation ? Success in education is determined by the extent to which the learning objectives are realized. The progress towards attainment of objectives has to be assessed and evaluated for otherwise, we will not know where we are going. One of the main purposes of evaluation at the school stage is to help the learner's improve their achievement in scholastic areas and to develop Life Skills and attitudes with reference to the larger context and canvas of life. Further, in NPE (1986) it has been emphasized that at the school level the evaluation should be formative or developmental in nature because at this stage child is in the formative stage of learning and thus the emphasis should be on improvement of learning. Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) refers to a system of school- based evaluation of students that covers all aspects of students development. It is a developmental process of assessment which emphasizes on two fold objectives. These objectives are continuity in evaluation and assessment of broad based learning and behavioral outcomes on the other. 4. Continuous Internal Assessment The term `continuous' is meant to emphasize that evaluation of identified aspects of students `growth and development' is a continuous process rather than an event, built into the total teaching-learning process and spread over the entire span of academic session. It means regularity of assessment, frequency of unit testing, diagnosis of learning gaps, use of corrective measures, retesting and for their self evaluation.
  • 4. Purpose of Internal Assessment > Identify strengths and weakness > Plan learning > Provide feedback to learner > Measure individual attainment > Make future choice > Award qualification > Provide information to employers > Monitor and maintain standards > Evaluate performance levels The success of the system depends on its acceptance by students. Tests, assignments etc. must be framed to enable objectivity in assessment. The student must be briefed clearly and in advance about the programme of assessment, its contents, timing and criteria and the weightages attached to each method of assessment. He should also be allowed to discuss the valuation of his assignments, answer books or other work at every stage and be convinced of its fairness. 5. Comprehensive Evaluation The second term `comprehensive' means that the scheme attempts to cover both the scholastic and the co scholastic aspects of students' growth and development.
  • 5. Since abilities, attitudes and aptitudes can manifest themselves in forms other then the written word, the term refers to application of variety of tools and techniques (both testing and non-testing) and aims at assessing a learner's development in areas of learning like : 1.
