1. Title of Project: INCREASE THE CONCRETE STRENGTH BY ADDING
ADMIXTURE BY SUPERPLASTICIZER
2. Project Summary:
In concrete the superplasticizer reduce the water cement ratio. With the mixing of the
superplasticizer by which effect on concrete the improve workability , flexural strength
and compressive strength of concrete. As per the Abram statement the strength of the
concrete mix is inversely proportional to the mass ratio of water to cement. As the water
content increase , the strength of concrete decrease. 1-2% superplasticizer is sufficient
for per unit wt. of cement. in excessive amount of superplasticizer will result in
excessive segregation of concrete and is not advisable. depending on the particular
chemical used, use of too much superplasticizer may result in a retarding effect. In the
project the amount of superplasticizer varies from 0% to 3% in equal proportion 0.5%
and the effect on properties of concrete will be studied.
3. Technical Details of the Project:
Concrete mix design is a process of proportioning the ingredients in right proportions. The
objective of any mix design method is to determine an appropriate and economical combination
of concrete ingredients that can be used for a first trial batch to produce a certain concrete which
is close to that can achieve a good balance between various desired properties of concrete at the
minimum cost. Mix design of high performance concrete (HPC) is different from that of usual
concrete because of the following reason.
• Water-binder ratio is very low.
• Concrete quite often contains cement replacement materials that drastically change the
properties of fresh and hardened concrete.
• Slump or compaction factor can be adjusted using high range water reducing admixture
(HRWRA) without altering water content.
Based on the results of experimentation it is stated that the following material specifications
must meet to develop HPC mixes of desired workability and target compressive strengths such
as Cement, Fine Aggregate, Coarse Aggregates, Mineral Admixtures, and Chemical Admixture.
Admixture are artificial or natural materials added to the concrete besides cement, water and
aggregate to improve certain property of concrete during casting or setting or service stage. To
improve the properties of concrete required admixtures have two types: chemical admixture or
7. mineral admixture. Mineral admixture are the fine ground solid material i.e. fly ash, slag, and
silica fume. it is added to the concrete generally in larger amount than any other type. because
mineral admixtures have an ability to enhance workability as well as finish ability of freshly
laid concrete. and Chemical admixture are the admixture that are added to concrete in a very
small amount for a specific function to concrete. if chemical admixture are added more than the
defined than it has a very wide range of negative effects on the properties off fresh as well as
hardened concrete. some chemical admixture are there Accelerators, Retarders, Water-reducing
agents, entraining agents etc.
superplasticizer are the improved chemical admixture over plasticizer with highly effective
plasticizing effects on wet concrete. superplasticizer improve the workability of the concrete at
the constant water cement ratio. superplasticizer are organic poly-electrolytes that belong to the
category of dispersants. some of the superplasticizer are synthetic. some superplasticizer are
derived from natural products. superplasticizer are the classified in to 3 categories.
1.Sulphonated Melamine Formaldehyde Condensate (SMF)
2.Sulphonated Napthalene Formaldehyde Condensate (SNF)
3.Modified Lignosulphonates (MLS).
3.1 Definition of the Problem or Objective:
The objectives must be clearly defined; the followings are the objective of this project which
include:
1. To determine the optimum dosage of concrete superplasticizer for normal concrete.
2. To investigate the effects of superplasticizer on properties of concrete.
3.2 Work Plan:
Literature Survey Months
Design of Project System 2 Months
Result and Discussions 15 Days
Future Scopes and Applications 10 Days
8. 3.3 Methodology:
Step 1: Design the concrete mix of M30 grade with the help of IS 10262:2009.
Step 2: Add the Superplasticizer in the concrete mix in equal proportion of 0.5%.
Step 3: Preparation of concrete Cubes ,Cylinder, and Beam Mould for the time period of 7
,14 , 21 , and 28 days .

9. 3.5 Proposed Outcomes or Findings:
The superplasticizer effect on the properties of concrete such as slump , compressive strength ,
workability .As well as superplasticizer amount are increased slump value also increased.
however, the superplasticizer will help to retain the concrete in liquid state for a longer time,
and hence reduce the slump loss during the transportation of concrete to the site. The
workability of concrete is increased with the mixing of superplasticizer. compressive strength of
concrete is also increased by the mixing of superplasticizer.

8. Utilization of the Outcomes of Project :
Superplasticizer are the improved chemical admixture or plasticizer with highly effective
plasticizing effect on wet concrete. superplasticizer result in substential enhancement in
work ability at a given water cement ratio for a constant work ability reduction of water
content up to 30% may be achieved by the use of superplasticizer. superplasticizer can be
used at the higher doses than conventional plasticizer in the range of 0.5% to 3% by weight
of cement.
