3. So far you should have…
• An overview of 3+ subgenres of commercial
photography via page rips and annotation
• Chosen 1 of these and continued to research via
more page rips etc
• Chosen a publication/style to work within
• Have identified low, mid and high key set-ups in
found images
• Made a good start on your (at least) 2
photographers, analysing as usual plus identifying
lighting set-ups

4. Task
• Working in small groups we will achieve at least the
following 3 set-ups. You will then go on to explore other
low-key ideas
• Initially you will work with your mobile phone as a light
source and then we will add flashes/strobes and/or
continuous lights and modifiers/gobo’s
• You must note down meta data (including flash power) and
create lighting diagrams
• This can be used for Task 2

6. Camera settings with strobe
• Sync speed 1/160-1/200 - try to go higher and
see what happens (unless you have a fancy
camera!)
• Aperture controls strobe - start on f.8
• Speed controls ambient
• ISO is both but keep low if possible
• Hard light comes from small direct light source,
the sun is hard!
• Soft light comes from broader bigger source, the
sun behind clouds becomes soft

9. Homework
• Try some low key sets at home using your phone
and a range of different continuous lights. Make
sure you start to shoot ‘on theme’
• Continue with Task 1. Lesson 3 will require this
nearly finished and will involve class discussion
on your chosen artists
• Bring a standard head and shoulders portrait of a
friend or family member on a USB for lesson 2
