- 3. GIFTED OR ADHD? • Behaviors associated with both overlap • Difference is only in the child’s ability to stay focused and on task. • Misdiagnoses of gifted children. • Lowers the IQs of ADHD children. • Studies removed the IQ status of the two, showing that giftedness can be found in children with ADHD.
- 4. FAMILY-STUDY DESIGN • Looks the high rate of familial ADHD in first-degree relatives & rate of familial ADHD in first-degree relatives with high IQs. • Assesses the validity of high IQ with ADHD. • Proves that ADHD children can have high IQs.

LEARNING DISABILITIES • Learning disabilities coexist with ADHD • Reading – Math – Spelling • If they don’t have a learning disability then they are faced with other obstacles • Inattentiveness – Impulsiveness – restless behavior • Can one actual determine the IQ of children with ADHD? • This question may never be answered.
- 9. FUTURE RESEARCH • A “pure” ADHD group would be need to address the research question more clearly. • A longitudinally study that followed children into adulthood may shed some light on to this topic. • Is it plausible to speculate that ADHD children IQs could increase overtime as they learn to control some of their symptoms?

- Only 10% of the population has IQ’s of 120 – 136, while only 1% have a IQ over 137. Individuals want to be associated with having a high IQ; however some individuals are stereotyped with having lower IQ’s than the general population.
- Children with ADHD also show some of the same behaviors as gifted children such as restlessness, inattention, impulsivity, and high activity level. Misdiagnoses of children as being gifted because of their IQs and not as having ADHD lowers the high level of the ADHD population. Giving them the status of having lower IQs. Few studies have been done to show that giftedness can be found in ADHD children. The lack of thorough physical evaluations and extensive psychological evaluations limits the accuracy of the data available to study.
- Family studies look at the connection of first-degree relatives and their IQs and how they can prove that children can have high IQs and ADHD.
- This study was chosen to prove the fact that ADHD children do not have low IQs. The study shows that with or without a reading problem these children had IQs that where normally distributed among the general population.
- There are a large range of test available to determine IQs. Studies focus on more than one test to assure that the results are correct.
- Learning Disabilities are another concern with ADHD children and their IQs. We may never be able to determine the IQs of ADHD children due to all these obstacles they are faced with. It is to hard to determine what percentage of their IQ is associated with what.
- An understanding of ADHD would be helpful to society. Give those who have it hope that they may overcome some of the challenges that they are faced with. Further studies would be useful to see how ADHD affects an individual throughout their life.
