The presentation deals with the range of features of the Linux sound subsystem — Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA). During the presentation, the participants were provided with case studies of the difference it makes for the development of audio drivers for PC and embedded systems. Also, it was shared an overview of the state-of-the-art tendencies in the development of audio drivers for embedded systems. This presentation by Vadym Shovkoplias (Senior Software Engineer, GlobalLogic Kharkiv) was delivered at GlobalLogic Kharkiv Embedded TechTalk #1 on March 13, 2018.

SoC+FPGA solutions are vital part of the embedded ecosystem and 2018 brought many improvements to their upstream support. At the beginning, Marek explains what SoC and FPGA systems are and how their combination on a single piece of silicon can be useful. This is followed by multiple important news from U-Boot and Linux upstream. On the Intel side, Marek covers the newly supported Arria10/Stratix10 in upstream U-Boot as there are considerable differences from the previous generation of SoCFPGA. This is followed by a brief look at the constantly improving support for those SoCs in mainline Linux and their real-world usability with LTS and CIP trees. On the Xilinx side, U-Boot can now completely replace proprietary boot components on ZynqMP and Marek explains how to make this change and what the pros and cons are. While mainline Linux support for Zynq and ZynqMP is improving too, there are still many limitations preventing pure mainline Linux from being used in real-world systems. Marek points out those limitations as well as ways to deal with them. Concluding the Xilinx part of the talk is the Lima open-source Mali4xx GPU driver, which allows replacing the proprietary userspace blob controlling the GPU. The current state of the driver as well as how to get it operational on ZynqMP is explained in this talk. Finally, important security fixes mitigating recently discovered hardware problems are now available in U-Boot, yet enabling those is not a simple matter of flipping a Kconfig option, but instead requires careful analysis of the entire system. Marek points out which software components need to be checked and outlines a fix for those before the security problems can be considered addressed.

MIPI CSI-2-compliant cameras are popular in mobile and mobile-influenced devices because of the specification’s ability to handle high image resolution over fast links with low-power consumption. SoC designers can accelerate their design process by integrating the software drivers to make initial development easier and directly control boot-up sequences. This presentation by Licinio Sousa of Synopsys describes how to use the existing host-side V4L2 API and V4L2 subdevice interfaces to ease the integration of a CSI-2-compliant camera with an existing system. This approach allows designers to easily change their camera without having to make any changes to the CSI-2 host driver.

Over the past two years, the support of the platforms based on ARM processor in the Linux kernel has evolved considerably. Between the use of the Device Tree, moving drivers in many features like clock management or multiplexing of pines, the platform mechanism, the changes have been numerous. Through the experience of the speaker about the addition to the core support for ARM Marvell Armada 370/XP processors, this intervention will provide an overview of these changes in order to better understand the new organization of the code for ARM architecture in the kernel. This talk is intended to be useful both for developers who want to add support for a new ARM processor in the kernel, but also to those wishing to understand the ARM code for porting Linux to a new card, or just the curious one.
