Though the first promise of God proclaimed that Messiah would be born of a woman; the prophets declared a "virgin shall conceive;" Mary, the mother, questioned "How can this be seeing I have not known a man?" and Dr. Luke examined in detail the virgin birth, there are many who challenge the belief in the uniqueness of Messiah's birth. This very brief study examines the reasons for believing in the virgin birth.
2. “Most Christians in all the churches
in the world confess as they recite
the Apostles' Creed that Jesus was
born of the virgin Mary. Now...
modern Christians completely discount the
historicity of the virgin birth and understand
it in a figurative sense... The tomb was full
and the manger empty”
Gerd Lüdemann
Professor, University of Göttingen, Germany
3. “Those first disciples ... when
they thought about his coming
they were sure that he came
specially from God ... they associated with
God's special influence and intention in his
birth ... but they phrased it in terms of a
biological miracle that our modern minds
cannot use.“

Professor at Union Theological Seminary
Pastor of Park Avenue Baptist Church
4. Nicholas D. Kristof,

The New York Times
2006 wrote in the The New York Times
that belief in the Virgin Birth is evidence that
conservative Christians are “less intellectual.”
“The Virgin Mary is an interesting prism through
which to examine America’s emphasis on faith,
because most Biblical scholars regard the
evidence for the Virgin Birth … as so shaky that it
pretty much has to be a leap of faith.”

According to the Pew Research Center:
• 73% of adults believe Jesus was born of
a virgin
• 32% of those with "no formal religion”
affirm belief in the virgin birth of Jesus
6. Carl F. H. Henry
founding editor of Christianity Today
The Virgin Birth is the “essential, historical
indication of the Incarnation, bearing not
only an analogy to the divine and human
natures of the Incarnate, but also bringing
out the nature, purpose, and bearing of
this work of God to salvation.”
7. "The virgin birth is an underlying assumption
of everything the Bible says about Jesus. To
throw out the virgin birth is to reject Christ's
deity, the accuracy and authority of Scripture,
and a host of other related doctrines that are
the heart of the Christian faith. No issue is
more important than the virgin birth to our
understanding of who Jesus is. If we deny
Jesus is God, we have denied the very
essence of Christianity."
John F. MacArthur
Pastor-Teacher
8. 26 Now in the sixth month the angel
Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee
named Nazareth,27 to a virgin betrothed to
a man whose name was Joseph, of the
house of David. The virgin’s name was
Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel
said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one,
the Lord is with you; blessed are you
among women!”
9. 29 But when she saw him, she was troubled
at his saying, and considered what manner
of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said
to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you
have found favor with God. 31 And behold,
you will conceive in your womb and bring
forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
10. 32 He will be great, and will be called the
Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will
give Him the throne of His father David. 33
And He will reign over the house of Jacob
forever, and of His kingdom there will be
no end.” 34 Then Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I do not know a
man?”
11. JESUS WAS BORN OF A VIRGIN
IN ORDER TO BE…
And I will put enmity between you and the
woman, and between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise
His heel.”
Genesis 3:15
13. JESUS WAS BORN OF A VIRGIN
IN ORDER TO BE…
Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is
given; and the government will be upon His
shoulder. And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace.
15. JESUS WAS BORN OF A VIRGIN
IN ORDER TO REVEAL…
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,
and shall call His name Immanuel.
16. JESUS WAS BORN OF A VIRGIN
IN ORDER TO BE…
Matthew 1:23
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear
a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,”
which is translated, “God with us.”
20. Paul, a bondservant of Jesus
Christ, called to be an
apostle, separated to the
gospel of God 2 which He
promised before through His
prophets in the Holy
Scriptures, concerning His
Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who was born of the seed of
David according to the flesh,
21. Then the angel said to
them, “Do not be afraid,
for behold, I bring you
good tidings of great joy
which will be to all
people. 11 For there is
born to you this day in
the city of David a Savior,
who is Christ the Lord.
22. 25 And behold, there was a
man in Jerusalem whose
name was Simeon, and this
man was just and devout,
waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy
Spirit was upon him. 29 “Lord, now You are letting
Your servant depart in peace, according to Your
word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation 31
which You have prepared before the face of all
peoples, 32 a light to bring revelation to the
Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.”
23. 36 Now there was one,
Anna, a prophetess, 38 And
coming in that instant she
gave thanks to the Lord,
and spoke of Him to all
those who looked for
redemption in Jerusalem.
24. Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of
flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the
same, that through death He might destroy him
who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15
and release those who through fear of death were
all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For indeed
He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid
to the seed of Abraham. 17 Therefore, in all things
He had to be made like His brethren, that He might
be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things
pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins
of the people.
25. 4 But when the fullness of the time had
come, God sent forth His Son, born of a
woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem
those who were under the law, that we
might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And
because you are sons, God has sent forth
the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying
out, “Abba, Father!”
26. Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it
robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of
no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and
coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in
appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and
became obedient to the point of death, even the death
of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted
Him and given Him the name which is above every
name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of
those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
the Father.
